Tyre Size Calculator: Exploring the Upsize Calculator for Optimized Performance

Car Tyre Size Calculator

Tyre Upsize Calculator

While buying an automobile, we sometimes, being an enthusiast look for upgradation options, be it the interior or the exterior. But the most important upgradation that the majority of the auto-enthusiasts always look for is “Tyre Upgradation” or “Tyre Upsizing”. No doubt that tyre upsizing gives a car a bold new look, but it also sometimes affects the vehicle’s overall performance, especially the fuel efficiency.

Therefore, it is necessary for a car owner to understand the pros and cons of Tyre Upsizing before going for an upgradation. Technically, tyre upsizing can be done in 2 ways:

1- Mounting wider tyres while retaining the original wheels.
2- Upgrading to larger wheels and installing wider wheels.

There are both advantages as well as disadvantages of tyre upsizing.

Tyre Upsize Advantages May Include Like:

● Cosmetic upliftment of a vehicle.
● Personalization of a vehicle giving an oomph factor.
● Offering greater grip on the road which helps in maintaining greater control, safe braking.
● Wider tyres offer better cornering even when the vehicle is moving at high speed.
● It enhances the overall performance of a car by remarkably improving the balance, stability and traction thereby making the drive safe and secured.

While Tyre Upsize  Disadvantages Include:

● Tyre upsizing will make you spend extra shells on the type of tyre to be used.
● Although wider tyres enable good grip but they also reduce paddle acceleration due to the weight imposed by the tyres.
● Wider tyres require extra effort to manoeuvre the steering by the driver. This could turn into a disaster, especially in slow moving traffic.
● Wider tyres can also result in bumpy and uncomfortable drive.

With the tyre size calculator, one can choose best-suited size tyres for his vehicle. There are basically two ways to calculate upsizing:

1- Retaining Original Wheels/Alloys:

In this, no modification will be done to car’s metal portion but the tyre will be changed as per the required fitment and possibility.

To ensure safe tyre upsizing, you must keep in mind that the overall diameter (OD) of new tyres is between the permissible tolerance i.e. only up to 3% of the OD of stock tyre.

E.g. suppose if the OD of the stock tyre is 24.47 inches, then the OD of the new tyre cannot be more than 25.20 inches i.e. stock tyre OD 24.47 inches + maximum 3% increase in OD of the new upsized tyre.

Know how to achieve the permissible tolerance –

Tyre Width:

Assume the original size of the tyre is 185/65 R15 with an OD of 24.47 inches.

Here, the width of the stock tyre (company equipped tyre) is 185mm.

Let’s now add 20mm to the width of your stock tyre for safe upsizing.

Now, the width of your new tire is 205mm.

Calculating Sidewall Height:

The sidewall height of our stock tyre is 65% of the thread width (185/65 R15).

The thumb rule to calculate sidewall height says that for every 10mm increase in width of tyre, the sidewall height (or aspect ratio) should be reduced by 5%.

As we have increased 20 mm width for the upsizing tyre, therefore, the sidewall height should be reduced by 10%.

So now, the sidewall height of the upsized tire will be 55% of the thread width.

Rim Size:

As we are retaining the original wheels/alloys therefore, the Rim size or diameter will remain same. In this case, it is will remain 15 inches.

Therefore, ideally the maximum upsizing limit for a stock tyre size 185/65 R15 should be 205/55 R15.

2- Upgrading to Larger Wheels/Alloys:

Car Tyre Size Calculator

Here, in this case, you are replacing the car wheels/alloys with a new set of larger wheels. Basically, you are replacing the OEM fitted or company fitted wheels/alloys (the metal portion) in order to increase the wheel/alloy diameter, ultimately upgrading the wheel charisma. These larger wheels/alloys are called low profile wheels/alloys and are fitted considering the gap between the wheels and the vehicle wheel arcs. Here also one must keep in mind about the permissible allowed limit.

To upgrade to bigger alloys, we will have to stick to the permissible tolerance mentioned in the previous example i.e. up to 3%.

So if we want to upgrade 185/65 R15 (15-inch alloys) to 16-inch alloys, then the size of the new tyre should be 205/55 R16, keeping the tyre OD within 3% permissible tolerance, i.e., between 24.47 – 25.20 inches.
