How To Upsize Tyres For Motorcycles?

In this article, we talk about the pros and cons of Upsizing & how to correctly Upsize your tyres for your motorcycle along with an example to give you a clearer understanding.

100 kmph and above is a certain rush in India that the youth can’t get enough off! But what’s even more exciting is the thrill of making the motorcycle looking like the beast it is in terms of performance and looks – Cut handlebars, modified exhausts, meaner dooms and definitely wider tyres, that’s certainly going to make heads turn

But we want to discuss the WIDER TYRES in particular in this article because up-sizing might be all fun and easy with cars but upsizing with motorcycles is a whole new world. So, we have listed down a few things that you have to keep in mind while up-sizing the tyres for your 2-wheeler

Every motorcycle manufacturer picks the tyres that are most suitable for the motorcycle after extensive research while considering various factors about the kind of handling and performance the vehicle is supposed to showcase on the average Indian road conditions. But, if you still wish to upgrade your tyres, then you might want to consider the following:

upgrade your tyres - tyre upsize guide

1. Width and Profile of the tyre:

The width of the tyre is measured in millimetres from the bead of one side to another. This width defines the kind of contact patch the tyres allow to determine the amount of grip and balance the motorcycle sanctions. The height of the sidewall is usually calculated as the percentage of the width. On general, tyres with lower profile offer more flexibility which means better comfort and handling especially in corners. And when the sidewall height is higher, the tyre is more rigid to make the tyre more durable under rougher riding conditions.

2. Speed Rating and Load Index:

The Alphabet after the rim size denotes the speed that the tyres can withstand. And the number after that certain alphabet talks about the amount of load the tyres can hold. For example – “ZR” rated tyres can withstand the pressure exerted by riding at speeds of 300 kmph and above while “J” means the tyres can handle speeds of around 100kmph.

3. Alloy/Rim size:

This talk about the diameter of the wheel mounted on the vehicle. While upsizing tyres many might consider up-sizing wheels as well with the intension of allowing ground clearance. But is it not as simple as it might seem because you will have to consider the increase in the overall diameter after the tyre is mounted as the RPM too is going change along with the amount of pressure the engine is going to endure.

Now that we have the basics out of the way lets get into some technicalities.

Is up-sizing a good option?

If you are looking for a “yes” or “no” answer, sorry to burst your bubble but it is not that simple.

First, you will have to think about the width of the rim and the width of the tyre that your stock rims can accommodate without compromising the integrity of the wider tyres. We say this because if the tyres are wider than the rims can accommodate, over a period of time the tyres are going to lose its original structure. Lose original structure? Yes, that is very much possible because the tyres going to experience a pinch effect that will eventually disfigure the tyre on the whole. By not allowing the sidewall to act individually like they are supposed to especially in terms of radial tyres leading to disfigurement while cornering. This can prove fatal for safety and handling as well.

Second, fitting wider tyres without considering the vehicles overall performance in mind will lead to difficulty while cornering. Wondering why? Well, wider contact patch doesn’t always mean better cornering, sometimes to gain the kind of momentum in corners, you will need a certain lean angle that only particular tyres will provide with the round profile that the bike needs will not be available anymore.

Third, the fatter tyres also have to fit comfortably between the swing arms and sprockets. Even if the tyres seem to fit without touching the swing arms when mounted, you will have to consider the load that the tyres have to endure and it is no secret that with high load the more flatter the tyres are going to get while riding which will eventually lead to scraping or touching the swing arm which will inevitably lead to misplaced handling and balance. Even if the handling is not misplaced due to directly brushing the swingarms, the light brushing will cause uneven wear and lower tyre life at the least.

Fourth, even if you plan to up-size the wheels along with the tyres, the problem of space between the swing arms is going to prevail. And if that is the least of our concern, you should consider all the loss of power that is going to occur due to the friction caused by the wider contact patch. Next, you can’t miss the fact of higher fuel consumption and higher stress that the engine is going to face due to increased weight. While the top speed might be achieved much faster thanks to the larger circumference, you will still have to keep in mind the toll it takes on the transmission and the engine.

Fifth, In India the odometer and speedometer sensors are usually mounted on the front wheels. So, if you are planning on changing the front wheels/tyres, you will experience an error reading of speed and distance covered. To give you a better understanding have a look below:

If a motorcycle has a front tyre with the size 80/100-18,

  • The overall diameter of wheel in inches = diameter of the rim in inches + (2 x height of sidewall in inches

= 18 + 2 x (80/25.4)

= 18 + 6.3

= 24.3 inches approximately

  • Circumference of the wheel in inches = 2 x 22/7 x radius

 = diameter x 22/7

 = 24.3 x 22/7

 = 76.37 inches

If we upsize the tyre to 90/100-18 for the front, the calculations will result in 78.85 inches.

The original tyres covered a distance of 76.37 inches, while the up-sized tyres cover a distance of 78.85 inches per rotation. But the sensors are still calibrated according to the original tyre size of 80/100-18. Although there is a difference of 3.25%, you will not be aware of it.

Now that we have established all that can go wrong with blindly up-sizing tyres, we can look onto the brighter side.

If the up-size is done right then it can have really good advantages too like enhanced grip, more comfort on bumpy roads, better handling etc.

Two important points to remember while up-sizing tyres are:

1. Check the space between swingarms and sprockets.

The sum of width + profile should be equal to the total of original tyres. If the sum of the stock tyres is equal to the sum of up-size tyres, the tyres should fit without any hassles in most cases.

Example: if the stock tyres are 120/80-17 and you wish to upsize to 130/70-17, the sum of both the tyre sizes land at 200, which is acceptable. But remember to still check with your technician as this rule is just a guide most cases and will probably not work in some cases.

2. Keep the sidewall height as similar as possible.

Example: if the stock tyres are 120/80-17, the height of the profile is 96mm and when upgrading to 130/70-17, the height of the sidewall is 91mm which is less than half a centimetre of difference which is well managed.

In all fairness, we recommend sticking to stock tyres but if you wish to up-size with a specific intention, the above-mentioned rules and points can guide you well.

  • Hi,
I’m riding honda cb350 highness with 130/70 18 rear wheel and tyre. Can I change my rear tyre to 150/70 17 section? Do I need to change the wheel? Will the tyre rub against the chain/swingarm?

    • Hi Manan,

Yes, you will have to change the wheel. This upsize is not recommended by Tyremarket.com.

      Thanks

  • I want to upgrade my rear tyre of Honda SP 125. Its size is 80/100-18. Can I upgrade it to 100/90-18…? Or should I upgrade it to 100/80-18…??

    • Hi,

80/100 R18 is the perfect size. If you upsize, there will be a problem with the tyre rubbing against the chain/swingarm.

      Thanks

    • Yes, You can go for 100/80, 90/90 or 3.00. I have tried 100/80 mrf zapper for my sp125.. there’s no touching anywhere. Handling and looks got better. But as width is 2cm more than stock, the tyre will be compressed in the rim, as a result the original shape of tyre is slightly altered.

    • Bhai, You can go for 90/90-18 (max). Many people may suggest you for 100/90-18. But, that’s not true. 100/90-18 will not only rub into your Chain Guard & Swing Arm but, it will also rub against your Rear Fender from the inside.

      • Hi sir, please suggest me , upgrade the size of rear tyre of hero Xtreme 150cc 2014 model
        Current size 110/90/18

      • 80/100 R18 is the perfect size. If you upsize, there will be a problem with the tyre rubbing against the chain/swingarm.
Why the another question is answered like that.

  • Hi, i I ride a dominar 250. Rear stock tyre is 130/70. Rim size is 17. Can I upgrade to 150/60? If not, what size is recommended?

    • Hi,

130/70 R17 is the best upsizing option for Dominor. With the 140/70, we have had poor customer reviews like problems with the braking & it requires some setting in bearing.

      Thanks

  • I’m planning to upsized my stock 110/70-17 & 150/60-17 to 120/70-17 & 160/60-17. Is it advisable? Riding Husqvarna Svartpilen 200 2020. Planning to use Pirelli Scorpion Rally Str.

    • Hi,

You can put larger tyres on Svartpilen but it won’t improve handling and could make it worse. The wider and heavier the tyres, the more inertia they’ll have and due to the bigger contact patch, the bike will be harder to turn. However, you can upsize to 120/70 & 160/60.

      Thanks

  • I am using a 130/80-12inch tyre for my Aprilia STORM 125. Can I upgrade to 140/70-12 inch tyre without changing my rim.

      Thanks

Greetings from tyremarket.com. We understand the concern. According to the tyre upsize metrics, it is unsafe to upsize the front tyre to 120/70 ZR 17. However, it is safe for the rear tyre to upsize to 160/60 ZR 17. Also, understand the factor that the upsizing of tyres will definitely affect the overall riding experience and mileage of the vehicle.
