Chinese Imports Jeopardising ‘Make in India’ Campaign: Apollo Tyres

Chinese tyres threat to Make in India says Apollo Tyres

Domestic tyre makers are going through a troubled phase and the concern surrounding them is alike i.e. the increasing import of Chinese tyres in the country. Upset over the same issue, a senior representative of Apollo Tyres stated that the increased dumping of China-made tyres is putting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ drive at risk.

Till sometime back Chinese tyres hardly had any impact on the Truck and Bus Radials (TBRs), however, last year the import of Chinese products swelled by 70 percent. Moreover, this year it has grown to 40 percent, Mr. Satish Sharma, President, Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa, Apollo Tyres said in a statement. The truck-bus radial tyre industry in India is of four lakh tyres per month, out of which Apollo vends out nearly one lakh tyres, and when it comes to Chinese tyres it sells 1.5 lac units a month, he added.

Mr. Sharma, who is also the Vice Chairman of Automotive Tyre Manufacturers’ Association (ATMA), which represents India’s tyre industry, notified that after a two year follow up with the government it has acknowledged the plea in May this year for Anti-Dumping Duty, and have put things under process, which is lengthy one. Apollo Tyres is all prepared to contend with the local brands and manufacturers, however, cannot compete with the Chinese imports, he further added.

Currently, the biggest quandary that the tyre industry is facing is the dumping of China-made tyres and only the government can relieve the industry from this anxious situation, while the manufacturer cannot do anything in this matter.

The last couple of years has witnessed a decline of about 10 percent to 15 percent in the prices of Indian tyres and it is still sliding, while the Chinese tyres are 30 percent cheaper. Previously, in the Indian tyre arena, the competition was among a handful of tyre makers. However, with the foray of many potential foreign tyre brands such as Michelin, Yokohama and Continental Tyres the scene has taken a drastic change.
