The German tyre making giant, Continental AG has started production at its latest car and light truck tyre plant in Rayong, Thailand. The company started working on this $265 million project in the Southeast Asian country in 2017.
The new plant has the capacity to produce up to 4 million tyres in a year for the Asia Pacific and Thailand region by 2022. It is expected to employ up to 900 workers. This is Continental’s 6th tyre plant facility in the Asia Pacific region and overall 20th worldwide. Rayong plant is the 7th greenfield plant that Continental has started since 1998.
This unit will improve the balance of Continental’s global manufacturing footprint and strengthen its production capacities in the Asia Pacific region, said Nikolai Setzer, Tyre Division Head.
It is learnt that Continental’s new Rayong tyre plant has state-of-the-art energy efficiency standards. The plant has machines that have in-built technology for sustainable production along automated logistics and handling processes for an ergonomic work environment.
