On the 11th November 2016, many big shot French and European business & environment organizations, which includes AFEP, OREE, MEDEF, Vivapolis, Cercle de l’Industrie, Business Europe, ICC, the Institut Economie Circulaire (IEC) and association Entreprises pour l’Environnement (EpE) sat together to converse about the matter of – the circular economy in support of climate action: business and regional government initiatives.
Here, Michelin CEO and President of the EpE, Mr. Jean-Dominique Senard, avowed the approach that Michelin follows in implementing the principles of a circular economy via its “4R Strategy”, which guarantees a superior performing and more sustainable mobility. The 4Rs here, stand for Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Renew.
In general, we breathe in a linear economy that is based on extracting resources for our use, we make them into such things that can be utilized and then discarded, or in other plain words, a practice of – take, make and dispose. Whereas, in the ‘circular economy’, exactly opposite happens. Here it provides us with a substitute approach to the challenge of Earth’s limited resources and energy. Circular Economy is formed on the three principles i.e. (a) preserve and enhance natural capital, (b)
Whereas, in the ‘circular economy’, exactly opposite happens. Here it provides us with a substitute approach to the challenge of Earth’s limited resources and energy. Circular Economy is formed on the three principles i.e. (a) preserve and enhance natural capital, (b) optimize resource yields (c) and reveal and design out negative externalities (negative impacts to human health and the environment).
The core principles of the circular economy are applied by Michelin’s 4R Strategy by means of these 4 key measures:
• Reduce: Reduce/lessen the weight of the tyres and cut the emissions associated with its use and minimise the number of tires required to go anywhere. In a nutshell, optimum utilisation of the given resources should be conducted, all the way to the tyre’s very last mile.
• Reuse: Enlarge the life of the tyres through reusing the tyre by getting them repaired, regrooved or retreaded.
• Recycle: When the life of the tyres marks an end, recover their materials for other uses.
• Renew: Make the tyres using non-fossil and renewable materials.
With this initiative, the main objective of the France-based tyre magnate is to detach the growth of our interests from natural resource consumption, by making such tyres that are lighter, safer, help in providing high fuel economy and perform long lastingly.
