Maruti Suzuki India’s one of the most significant products came in the form of Maruti Zen. The 5-door hatchback was launched in 1993 and within a short time frame went on to become a household name in the country. With its advanced engine tech and effortless handling, it was fun to drive hatchback and first-choice of the people looking for a frugal alternative. The driver-oriented car saw many updates in its 14-year survival, one of the important being the Maruti Zen Classic avatar that featured chrome-draped round headlamps and tail lamps. Available in three variants the iconic entry level hatch Maruti Zen was powered by a 1.0L MPFI petrol engine. The car went out of production in 2006 making way for the second generation Maruti Zen, christened as Maruti Zen Estilo. Launched in 2007, the tall boy design city hatch witnessed many cosmetic updates and was discontinued after a run of about six years in 2013.
Maruti Zen Tyres:
The popular family car of its era Maruti Zen came equipped with 145/70 R13 and 145/80 R12 radial tyres for a comfortable and bump-free ride. Here, the base and mid variants were offered with 145/80 R12 tyres, while the top end spec was fitted with larger 145/70 R13 tyres. Maruti Zen, which was introduced as an improvement over the ageing Maruti 800, featured uncomplicated yet elegant appearance with straightforward looking front bonnet and simple front grille. The inside of Maruti Zen was also quite unfussy but was made comfortable with attributes like powerful HVAC system, spacious dashboard, seatback pockets, sun visor, fabric upholstery, folding rear seats, front power windows, child safety rear locks and many more smart features of that time.
Maruti Zen was packed with a fuel efficient 993cc, MPFi 4-cylinder, BS-3 compliant SOHC based petrol engine. The mini-mill mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox transmission outpoured a maximum power of 58 bhp at 6000 rpm and a peak torque of 78.45 Nm at 4500 rpm. The efficient engine delivered a mileage of 11.4 kmpl in city conditions and a claimed mileage of 17.3 kmpl under standard conditions.
Maruti Zen carried dimensions of 3535 mm (length), 1495 mm (width) and 1405 mm (height) alongside a wheelbase of 2335 mm and decent ground clearance of 165 mm.
Maruti Zen Price
The budget-friendly presentation in the hatchback segment by the leading car maker took the nation by storm. The base variant of Maruti Zen was tagged at INR 3.4 Lakh, while the mid-variant was priced at INR 3.66 Lakh. Moreover, the Maruti Zen price for the high-end spec went up to INR 3.92 Lakh. All prices mentioned are of ex-showroom Delhi.
