India’s leading tyre maker, Apollo Tyres has launched its range of two-wheeler tyres in the Sri Lankan market. With four-wheeler tyres already in, this development has now marked Apollo as the multifaceted tyre manufacturer in the island nation. Apollo’s two-wheeler tyre range was launched by Rajesh Dahiya, Group Head, Sales (India, SAARC and Oceania) Apollo Tyres Ltd and Jagath Samarsekhara, CEO, Ideal Wheels and Tyres. In attendance among others were company’s business partners and customers.

Apollo Tyres launched its operations in the Sri Lankan market in the year 2011. In a short span of time company’s products were successful in creating their own niche across the country. Sighting the overwhelming response for Apollo products, it has now introduced its two-wheeler range. Each year Sri Lankan market witness an estimated sales of around 2.50 – 3.00 lakh two-wheeler vehicles. In company’s export to SAARC countries, Sri Lanka contributes more than 20%. According to the Gurugram-based tyre firm, one of the reasons for its success in Sri Lanka has been the road and vehicle condition, which is quite similar to that of India.

During the launch Satish Sharma, President, Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa (APMEA), Apollo Tyres Ltd stated that in near future Sri Lanka will be the top island economy, and with FDIs surging at about 150% (in 2016) in the country, there is much of opportunity for Apollo to spread its wings in Sri Lanka. He further stated that Apollo is here to make the most of the increasing automotive sales, especially in the two-wheeler segment. The company is relying heavily on its Indian experience when it comes to tyre type selection, services and training requirements, which will eventually allow Sri Lankan vehicle owners to maximise on its products’ performance.

Apollo Tyres’ sole distributor in Sri Lanka, Ideal Wheels and Tyres is headed by Mr Nalin Welgama (Chairman) and former Sri Lankan Cricket Team Captain, Mr Aravinda De Silva (Deputy Chairman). The operations on daily basis are looked after by its CEO, Mr Jagath Samarasekara. Apollo Tyres has also set up ‘Apollo Zone’ in the posh market place of Galle Road in Colombo, which is also run by Ideal Wheels.

This movement of the company envisages Apollo’s Vision 2020, which is ‘to be a premier tyre company with a diversified and multinational presence’.
