Tyre Industry News – Soon you will see Green Tyres made from trees and grasses. The traditional rubber tyres are always considered as a threat to the environment, and therefore an alternative would be more than welcome. The scientists have developed a technology that can be used for creating a key molecule used for making automotive tyres. The best part is that the tyres made from the biodegradable material will have the same chemical composition as the reliable traditionally made ones. Even they will have the same shape, colour and performance as those made from rubber.

Paul Dauenhauer, Associate Professor at the University of Minnesota, U.S.A told that his team has created a new process to make isoprene (an important molecule in vehicle tyres). They have managed to get this from grass, trees, or corn. If things go in the right direction then this research could change the whole face of the multi-billion dollar tyre industry worldwide.

Biomass-derived isoprene has been a major initiative of tyre companies for many years. At present, isoprene is produced by thermally breaking apart molecules in petroleum that are similar to gasoline in a process called “cracking.” The isoprene is then segregated out of hundreds of products and purified. In the final step, the isoprene is reacted with itself into long chains to make a solid polymer that is the major component in car tires.

Scientists have focused on a new process that begins with sugars derived from biomass including grasses, trees and corn. And found that a 3-step process is optimised when it is “hybridised,” which means it combines biological fermentation using microbes with conventional catalytic refining that is similar to petroleum refining technology.

The isoprene obtained this way is much more economical and can boost the tyre production as the renewable material is abundant and easily available.

The study was published in the journal ACS Catalysis, a leading journal in the chemical and catalysis sciences. The Authors were from the University of Massachusetts, University of Minnesota, Amherst, and the Center for Sustainable Polymers, a National Science Foundation-funded center at the University of Minnesota.
