One of the world’s leading tyre producers, Pirelli has added another feather in its much-coveted hat. The company has launched FSC-certified (Forest Stewardship Council) tyres for the BMW X5 xDrive45e Hybrid vehicle. The Forest Stewardship Council is an international NGO that is responsible for setting standards dealing with environmental policies and environmentally responsible management of forests.
According to the Italian tyre makers, the new tyres would pave the way for sustainable tyre production in future. The new tyres are made using the FSC-certified natural rubber and rayon. The company has also announced that these first of a kind tyres will be manufactured in Pirelli’s Georgia, US-based factory.
Providing more information on FSC tyres, the company said that the certification from FSC means that the whole process of plantations and cultivation is done keeping the biodiversity intact as well as benefiting the local populations and workers.
The FSC-certified tyre is called Pirelli P Zero and it will be supplied for BMW X5 xDrive45e Plug-in Hybrid in the following sizes:
- 275/35 R22 (Front)
- 315/30 R22 (Rear)
Pirelli has developed P Zero keeping in mind the performance needs of the German carmaker. However, the tyre is within the scope of Pirelli’s ‘perfect fit’ strategy and ‘green’ philosophy. P Zero will have low rolling resistance (‘A’ on the European tyre label) and help in better fuel efficiency. Most importantly, it will also decrease noise levels, which will help the environment.Â
Speaking on this historic occasion, Giovanni Tronchetti Provera said, with the introduction of the world’s first FSC-certified tyre, Pirelli has once again shown its commitments towards suitable business. He reiterated the fact that the company is pursuing its dream of seeking sustainable growth or our beloved planet earth. He also made it clear that sustainable development is vital for future business.
Jeremy Harrison, International Chief Markets Officer, FSC, expressed his happiness at Pirelli’s achievement and emphasised that FSC will always play a driving force in a wider transformation across the tyre industry.
