In India travelling on kuchha, unpaved roads can be a lot of fun, but at the same time, it is one of the most demanding tasks too. We, as kids, have bogged down our toy cars in mud and might have made headways against our opponents; however driving in mud in actual life is really harsh, unless you are a hardcore off-roading enthusiast. What if, on a rainy day, while driving through the suburbs of your city you get stuck on a dirt road or you are on countryside’s adventurous trip and got your car trapped in muddy circumstances and want to get out of the situation. If you are a newbie to such situations and want to seriously know about the subject, then here are a few things to keep in mind on how to drive through mud:
How To Drive In Mud ?
- Driving into mud may perhaps be easy but crossing through it could be very tricky unless you are equipped with gears that can take you out of the muddy area. Shallow mud is easier to traverse on but they too can consist of a lethal combination of quicksand and ice rink. Unfortunately, if you are stuck, the best way to get car out of mud or say the most common response that triggers in mind is to give a little throttle to the engine. In mild incidents, this trick could work, but then also, this would take only a few seconds to determine the result.
- Secondly, if your car happens to be equipped with automatic transmission, try putting in the lowest gear. On the manual transmission, head to first or second gear and give it a gentle push. If it starts moving, then throttle a little more and try to escape the situation, but if it doesn’t help, try the next alternative.
- Move the opposite way from your actual destination. If you are moving forward, then try to push back and vice versa. Make sure you pedal the accelerator gently. If still, your car is stuck in the mud, it’s time to excavate.
- Your car is unmoved because it is not getting hold of the needed traction. Try to dig out some mud in front of your wheels. Put some dry stuff like gravel, sand and rubble on the car floor mat and into the leading edges of the mud wheels. Propel the car forward until the tyres get the needed grip. This trick works in most of the situations but if this also doesn’t help, then forget it. You are now completely stuck, and in need of a ‘sankat mochan’ to appear in front of you.
The ‘sankat mochan’ here is in the guise of the surface drive mud motor that can help you dig out your car from the mud pit and let you escape the situation, otherwise a tow truck is an ultimate remedy. It’s better to take along some handy tools with you or get the mud terrain tyres installed onto your car if you are a ‘serious’ off-roader. Mud tyres are always a good option before going for the off-roading. It’s available as an aftermarket fitment and can only be fitted in an all-wheel-drive vehicle.
Best mud tyres are those that typically come with large and solid tread patterns to sail through the muddy surface. On the other hand, depending on the type of tyre and tread pattern, mud terrain tyres are not suitable for on-road use and might be noisy on highways due to nature of their design.
