Looking for perfect tyres for your perfect car? Well, apart from the black and round characteristics how much you know more about a tyre’s technical aspects or specifications? Your car tyres are the most important element of your vehicle. So for optimal and efficient characteristics, it is highly recommended that you must know about the “what’s” and “how’s” in order to get best-fit tyres for your vehicle.

What Is Recommended?

Tyre specialists highly recommend that your car tyres must at least qualify for the same brand, same tread pattern, same size, and same load index and speed symbol. Although you can possibly mix tyres with speed symbol or load index, however, it should meet the minimum recommendations of the vehicle manufacturer. Moreover, tyres with high-speed rating must be installed on the rear axle.

Why Are Recommendations Important?

Many countries have legal laws that car tyres should follow the recommended pattern. These suggestions are important because:

  • Tyres are the only contact medium between your vehicle and the road. This contact is hardly larger than your palm size at a particular moment. So for a safe, smoother, well-handling and non-slippery driving experience you must follow manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Driving your vehicle with a mix of sizes, and different or non-uniform treading pattern can be really dangerous. Having equipped with uniform and recommended tyres promotes handling, stable steering and balanced/even tractions.
  • Replacing only a pair of tyres on the rear axle and equipping partially worn out tyres on the front can impart a better handling, especially in the case of hydroplanes on wet roads.

Can I Mix Different Tread Pattern Depths?

Generally, it is permissible to mix your tyres with different tread depths. While tyre specialists recommend that you fit new tyres to the rear axle. As per the recommendations, minor differences in tread depths (up to 2/32”) are allowable between the front and rear tyres.

  • Tyre tread grooves are designed to ensure maximum required contact on the road and, to disperse water on wet roads.
  • Even if it is permissible to install tyres with different tread depths, it becomes quite risky to handle, steer and balance traction on some wet or slippery surfaces.
  • In case the tyres have different tread patterns with non-recommendable conditions, then hydroplaning can cause risky and dangerous issues. Hydroplaning occurs when water on the roads cannot flow under the tyre’s tread pattern; it lifts up the tread until it loses the direct contact with the road. This causes instability in steering.
  • Tyres with tread depths usually cause a hydroplaning condition in shallow water and at a slower speed.
  • A greater grip on the rear axle than the front can provide a firm control over steer and stable grip on slippery surfaces. While some also recommend different tyre fitting based on the car’s manufacturing conditions.
