Mercedes-AMG GT R Gets Michelin Custom Pilot Sport Cup 2 Tyres As OE

Michelin will supply custom developed versions of its Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyre as the sole track focussed original equipment fitment on the new Mercedes AMG GT R. The road legal asymmetric tyres have a single rubber compound developed in motorsport series such as the World Endurance Championship. The tyre is designed to provide balanced handling, grip and endurance on the track. All these performance characteristics are specified by AMG’s engineers to Michelin. Different versions of the Pilot Sport Cup 2 have also been featured as OE on the BMW M4 GTS and Ford Focus RS in 2016.

Been labelled as the “most advanced road car to date”, the AMG’s GT R has challenged Michelin engineers into designing an ultra-high performance tyre which would offer the highest level of safety in a variety of conditions relating to road and track, while also not compromising on the tyre life, particularly during the circuit use. The developing of such ultra-high performance tyres took 18 months. Michelin said that it produced and tested almost 900 prototype tyres and 800 pre-series tyres, before finalising the present one. Testing of tyres was conducted by test drivers and engineers from both the companies on a number of circuits including Nardo, Nurburgring and Michelin’s own Ladoux test tracks near Clermont-Ferrand, France.

Apart from the addition to the new mono-compound and asymmetric tread pattern, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 also incorporates Michelin’s Motorsport’s Track Variable Contact Patch 3.0. This advanced technology optimises pressure in the tyre’s contact patch so the same amount of rubber is always in contact with the road or track while driving in a straight line or while cornering.

All these technical elements are well mixed up with the look also. The Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres also use Premium Touch effect in the sidewalls which are designed to enhance the look of the tyres and homogenise with the aggressive aesthetic of the car.

The Mercedes AMG GT R tyre sizes are 275/35 ZR 19 (front tyres) and 325/20 ZR 20 (rear tyres).
