The Mahindra Thar CRDe is an off-road SUV manufactured by the homegrown utility major, Mahindra & Mahindra. The all-terrain SUV features iconic ‘Jeep’ inspired styling, rugged emergence, robust body-built and powerful engine choice alongside the convenience of a four-wheel-drive mechanism. The go-anywhere vehicle offers brilliant off-roading capabilities and roomy cabin. The mannish Mahindra Thar model is presented in a sole trim with 4×2 and 4×4 drivetrain mechanisms. Over the years, the Thar has gone under knife several times resulting in a more comfortable and feature-rich inside and appealing outside. Mahindra Thar CRDe features a refined BS IV compliant 2.5 litre diesel engine under the hood that yields sizable power and torque output.

Mahindra Thar CRDe Tyres

The Mahindra Thar off-road SUV is offered in a single CRDe trim with 4×4 drivetrain system and two DI trims with options of 4×2 and 4×4 drivetrain system. The Thar DI is equipped with 185/85 R 16 tyres. Likewise, the more premium looking CRDe variant is fitted with 235/70 R 16 tubeless tyres.

Mahindra Thar CRDe Recommended Tyre Upsizing

Mahindra Thar CRDe Variants Stock Tyre Size Recommended Upsize
CRDe (4×4) 235/70 R 16 255/65 R 16

The Mahindra Thar is quite popular among the adventure-loving youth in the country. Besides adventure, Thar fanatics also look for aftermarket customisation in order to provide the off-road SUV with a more rugged and sturdy appearance. Such modified Thars can be easily spotted on Indian roads with heavy body cladding, larger size wheels and other equipment.

The Mahindra Thar gets its first and only recommended upsize option in the form of 255/65 R 16. The tyres with greater width help attain the Thar an added ground clearance of 0.3 percent above the original 200 mm ground clearance. These 255/65 R 16 tyres also bring in change in the diameter aspect by 2.5 mm.  This upsize will endow a better ground clearance and a more macho and gracious stance to the SUV. The wider tyres will offer better grip on the road surface and enhanced steering response.

When going for modification of Mahindra Thar CRDe, people usually ignore the technical piece of the wheel and rim sizes. As most of them are unaware of the fact that going for the bizarre up-gradation may adversely affect the functioning of the odometer and speedometer leading to incorrect readings and absurd handling of the SUV.

Take into consideration that the recommended tyre upsizing option will affect the ground clearance of the car either by lessening it or by increasing it. The rise in the ground clearance can be of maximum up to 3 percent or less than 3 percent compared to the original ground clearance. Moreover, in case the increase/decrease in the ground clearance exceeds the 3 percent mark, it will result in the upsetting of the speedometer operation.

Note – The above-mentioned tyre upsizing options may affect odometer reading marginally. These upsizes are suggested as per our upsizing calculation.

  • Can I fit 235/75 r-16 tyres in my Thar crde 2017 ?
This will definitely increase my G/C but what are the negative/bad effects this will have on my Thar , please advise ?

    • Dear Nirmal,

The tyre size of Mahindra Thar CRDE 2017 is 235/70 R16 and for this, we recommend you to install 245/70 R16 sized tyres to increase the ground clearance. Technically, 235/75 R16 sized tyres are not suggested.

      Thanks,
      Team Tyremarket.com

      • Thank you Sir for clearing my doubts. My Thar had just completed 5 years and I am going to upsize it’s tyres as per your recommendation 245/75 r16.

  • 255/65/16 is the right size for Mahindra thar as an upgrade , need to know if Yokohama G012 AT 255/65/16 is good and do we need to change the wheels or stock wheels are good enuf

  • Hi am got to take new Thar crde next couple of days, plz suggest brand and size to upgrade without any problems for d vechile, thanks – 255/70/R16 is fine ? Which brand is best At or Mt?

    • Dear Sunil,

The OE fitted tyre of Mahindra Thar would be of 235/70 R16 size and you can upgrade this size with 245/70 R16 sized tyres as the difference in circumference is less than 2%, which is the permissible limit of tyre upsizing. We would not recommend you to go with 255/70 R16 tyre size as with this size, the difference in circumference with the actual one is greater than 2%. For general purpose, AT (All Terrain Tyres) are good. You can buy either Michelin LTX Force, Goodyear Wrangler or Bridgestone Dueler D683.

For more assistance in buying tyres, please call +91-8088090090.

You can also buy 245/70 R16 sized tyres for your Mahindra Thar online.

  • If I just change the wheel rim to after market alloy by keeping the stock tyre. Will there be any impact on mileage and is that recommended? Or should I need to change the tyre as well? And if I Do all the changes will there be warranty can’t be claimed by any chance. Thanks

    • Dear Sundar,

      1. The stock tyre can be kept the same while changing alloys.
      2. Changing to a broader tyre will increase the comfort and safety at high speeds.
      3. Warranty of tyre is applicable always.

There will be no effect on the mileage as you are changing only the rims. And as you asked if this is recommended or not, we would say you can go ahead by changing your present wheel rims to alloy wheels.

For more assistance, call us at +91-8088090090.

    • Dear user,

      1. Stock tyre can be kept the same while changing alloys.
      2. Warranty of the tyre is applicable always.

There will be no effect on mileage as you are changing only the rims and not the tyre. You should ideally keep the alloy wheels of the same size as your existing rim.

        • HELLO I AM FROM NEPAL
I WANT TO REPALCE MY 235 70 R16 AT MY THAR
          WHICH OPTIONS ARE BEST ??????
          HERE LIMITED SIZE ARE AVILABLE

  • Sir, Currently my baby (Thar) is on Goodyear Wrangler RT/S 215/75 R15. I’m planning to lift him up by fitting any All-Terrain tires 31/10.5/R15. Kindly advise the pros & Cons or help me out with any other better option on R15 All-Terrain.

    • Dear Sir,

The tyre 31/10.5 R 15 is equivalent to 265/75 R 15. Your current tyre size is 215/ 75 R 15. When you calculate the difference percentage it will be close to 11% which is not a wise option unless you have plans of getting some work done on the suspensions/ fenders etc with the help of someone who is experienced.
Any type of up-sizing/ down-sizing will always have to cause a change in mileage and acceleration. The exact amount of difference will depend on the percentage of change made in terms of tires and rims.
We would suggest you stick with the stock size as every manufacturer has its own R&D team who run numerous tests in all aspects and decide on the stock tires. However, if you still wish to upgrade to broader tires safest options to consider are: 235/70 R 15, 275/60 R 15, 255/60 R 15, 325/50 R 15 etc. The sizes mentioned are a suggestion. Please consult your mechanic before you do move forward.

      Thanks

      • Dear Team,

Thanks for the quick response. Sounds fair, points taken!

I’m a 90% Highway rider / Daily commuter and 10% off-roader. A month ago I just did Chennai – Gangtok trip and on May month planned for Leh. I don’t want to stuck in any situation, so only skeptical about All-Terrian and also wanna stick with the 15″ alloys wheels.

Now, all I need to know is within a 2% change gimme a fair idea of All-Terrain, R15 tire options that are available in the market.

        Thanks in advance.

        Raj.

  • Hi mine is 2019 Thar crde, change the alloy from the showroom itself, now the stock tyre is 31,10.5R15 YOKO GEO, would like to upgrade bigger size with comfort ride ,quality, and looks, am 90% using city ride and highways, kindly suggest/advice me the size, tyre brand, rim etc. thanks
    ,

  • Mahindra Thar Di variant tyre sizes 185/85R16. Please let us know about the max upsize that can be fitted in vehicle with the stock rims

  • For my 2015 (new model) Thar, I want to upsize the tires. Currently using company fitted alloy wheels (16″) with 235/70 R16. Now I want to put 15 inch alloys but higher profile tires. Which is a good upgrade in that sense? Also, what is a good width in terms of comfort-performance.

    • Dear Sir,

“First, we actually recommend sticking to stock tyres unless there is a specific need that you have, because car manufacturers spend a bomb on R&D to pick the most compatible tyre size. When we say “bomb” it doesn’t just mean monetary but also in terms of time and resources. And when it comes to 4X4 or 4X2 the electronics of the vehicle will be calibrated according to the stock size and changing that will lead to an unsatisfactory drive experience. Second, if you still wish to take your changes and move ahead with an upgrade, moving from 16-inch alloys to 15 inch is an absolute no- no from our end. Assuming that you wish to increase the side wall height purely for a comfortable drive experience, you will not be able to achieve that by just down-sizing the alloy. You will in fact be reducing the ground clearance a lot. If you still wish to upsize, you can go for 245/70 R16. And since you are looking for a comfortable drive experience, we suggest you pick up something that uses softer tyre compound but only if you aren’t looking to off road. • hi but pls explain on the offset of OEM rims vs aftermarket rims no one tend to speak of it which is really important for load ,wheel scrub, backspace, and mainly bearing life.
i was researching it and spoke to some OEM bearing supplier they dont recommend such aftermarket rims at all.
this is mainly all after market alloys or rims available are with 0 offset only can the team put light on this area ? thanks.

  • I have Thar CRDe 2018 model and fitted with 245/70R16 and just a question whether I can use the same rim for the tyre size 235/70

    • Hello Nived,

No, we would not advise going for this size. We would rather suggest – 245/70 R16.

      Thanks

  • Is it possible to fix thar crde 235 70 R16 stock wheel rim and tyre on Thar Di 2wd?? If so. Where do I get used thar crde stock wheel rim (set of 5 ) for my thar di online. Currently iam using stock wheel and tyre (185 /85 R16) on my thar do 2wd..

    • Yes, you can fit 2022 Thar 18″ alloys on your 2017 Thar, but:
✔ Best Tire Size: 265/60 R18 (30.5″) for minimal rubbing.
✔ Check Clearance: Test-fit before finalizing.
✔ Speedo Correction: May need a recalibration.
