Government Shows Interest In Setting Up Institute For Rubber Industry

High-Price vs Low-Price Tyres - What Should You Choose?

The Government has shown its keenness to start a National Institute for skilling workforce in rubber and tyre manufacturing so as to cater to the training needs of the sector. This institution will be based on the lines of similar institutes that are there for plastics and leather industries.

Outlining the importance of Rubber at a conclave with top management of rubber and tyre industries organised by Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association (ATMA), Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Minister for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship said that – “Rubber is an important sector of the economy. However, India doesn’t have a principal institution in the country that caters to the needs of the sector”. Rudy also invited the industry to partner with the Government for an institution such as CIPET or FDDI. He also further highlighted the diverse needs of skill training in the tyre industry saying that around 15 crore tyres are being manufactured every year which will need a huge trained manpower.

Apart from the need of the manpower in the manufacturing sector, tyre alignment and maintenance which is also crucial for safety also need a trained workforce. Former Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association Chairman, Raghupati Singhania, said that the value chain of the rubber and tyre sector is long and a rich one which includes about 1 million natural rubber growers and about 2 million people working in about 6000 rubber and tyre industries across the country. Such a vast network of resources couldn’t have been sustained without a robust skilling system of the existing workforce and the new recruits. However, industry finds it difficult to find employable skilled people.

The Chairman of Rubber Skill Development Council (RSDC) – Vinod Simon said that the RSDC is trying to develop a strong eco-system for the sector such as developing National Occupational Standards which should affiliate the training providers, revising curriculum and certification of trainees as well as trainers.
