At the ongoing Geneva International Motor Show, Goodyear has launched its latest concept tyre that in future will be a solution towards a cleaner, safer, sustainable and convenient urban mobility.

The concept aptly named as Oxygene, has a unique feature – Living Moss growing inside the sidewall of the tyre. The tyre tread has been smartly designed to absorb and circulate the water and moisture from the road, thereby allowing photosynthesis to occur with the end product Oxygen released into the air.

President of Goodyear Europe, Middle East and Africa, Chris Delaney said that with the rising population of cities expected to make up to two-thirds of the world’s population by 2050, there will be an increase in the demand of the transport networks. Then the most pressing need would be to address the challenges of urban mobility and development by the smarter, greener infrastructure and transport. In this way, they will contribute to the cleaner air which will enhance the quality of life and health for people living in cities.

Goodyear’s Oxygene concept tyre has been designed with emphasis laid on curbing emissions and material waste. The concept has several performance solutions such as:

  • The Oxygene tyre while rolling will absorb the moisture from the road, inhale CO2 from the air on which moss will feed, thereby releasing the Oxygen in the atmosphere.
  • This concept tyre has a 3D printed non-pneumatic construction that uses rubber powder from recycled tyres.
  • The tyre provides extra strong grip by absorbing water, thereby maximizing the safety of the vehicle.
  • The concept tyre produces the energy generated during photosynthesis process to power its electronics including sensors, artificial intelligence processing unit.
  • It uses LiFi which enables the tyre to connect to internet thereby allowing data exchange between vehicle to vehicle and vehicle to infrastructure.

According to WHO’s estimates over 80% population living in urban areas are exposed to polluted air that exceeds WHO’s recommendations.
