Believe it or not! But maintaining car is a very important aspect that many of us ignore conveniently. Just taking your car for a wash or regular servicing is not all that it requires. There are other things too that you must check yourself to keep your vehicle in top shape. So, let’s see what you can do to maintain your car.

 

Tyre Replacement

The ‘coin tread depth measuring’ method is the best way to know when is the right time to change your vehicle tyres. But tyres should also be changed keeping in mind two major factors i.e. the number of Kilometres (Kms) your car has run and the number of years your tyres have not been changed. The maximum limit for Kilometres must not exceed 40,000 and a maximum number of years should be 5. However, keeping in mind the driving habits, temperature changes, road conditions and tyre quality it is always recommended to do a yearly checkup of tyres.

 

Tyre Rotation

This must be done after every 8000-10,000 Kms and always do tyre rotation in “cross pattern” for front wheel drive and rear wheel drive cars. It’s healthy for your vehicle as well as those rubbers.

 

Brakes

Clean brake dust regularly. Because if you leave the dust for too long then the combination of road grime, moisture and heat from your brakes will make it onto the wheels. The best way to clean brake dust is to take a damp sponge and clean cold water to wipe the dust.

 

Tyre Pressure

Check your tyre pressures regularly. Uneven and less tyre pressures affect fuel economy, handling as well as comfort for you.

 

Check Tyre Depth

Bald and slick tyres might be good for car racing but not for normal driving on the roads. Most tyres come with tread wear bars built into them and by looking it you can examine if your tread is too low. If yes, there’s one thing you need to do, “replace your tyre”.

 

Engine Oil

Checking your engine oil level is quick and easy. If the oil is too low or too high, it can cause trouble to your engine. To check the level, first take your car on a level ground and then locate the engine oil dipstick. Pull it out and wipe it clean and then push it back. Now again pull it out after some time and check the level of oil and act accordingly.

Why Oil Change Is So Important ?

Oil Filter

Change the oil filter regularly as it is absolutely important for the long-term life of your vehicle. Most people do realise the importance of oil, but they fail to understand that oil filter too is vital for their engine’s health.

 

Coolant

The coolant is also important for a vehicle without which an engine cannot work. Look out for the ‘high’ and ‘low’ signs on the transparent bottle of the coolant. Ideally, the level of coolant inside should be between the two. If not, take necessary measures.

 

Battery

If you are going to do any work involving an electrical system of the car, then disconnect the battery first. To do this, first loosen the Negative terminal first and then take off the Positive terminal. And while connecting the battery, first connect Positive terminal and then Negative terminal. You must also disconnect the battery when you are leaving your car for more than 2 weeks in the garage. This keeps the battery healthy.

Headlights

Special care should be taken while changing the headlight bulbs. If you pick up the glass using naked fingers, it will leave some traces of oil and grease on the glass which in turn let that area of the bulb get hotter than the rest of the area which eventually cause the bulb to crack.

 

Driving Technique

Stop-and-go driving, mountainous terrain driving and other adventurous driving can severely shorten the lifespan of your brake pads because of wearing out quickly than one might imagine. Modern cars and brake pads are virtually equipped with audible wear sensors. Once worn out, the pads will emit healthy squeals which will go on continuously to tell that it’s time to replace the brake pads.

 

Wipers

Windshield wipers need regular inspection as rubber deteriorates over time because of heat and cold. Once the deterioration starts, wiper blades lose the ability to flex and flip over in use. Wipers can then clatter against the glass and in most cases the result is a blade that can’t clean the windshield effectively.

 

Right Fuel

Use the right octane fuel. Higher than required octane doesn’t improve mileage (as many people believe). It only costs you more money.

 

Overloading

Please “Don’t Overload” the vehicle. It’s a common practice in our part of the world where we consistently overlook the cargo as well passenger limits of our vehicle. Overloading not only increases your fuel consumption but it also damages the roads, bridges and pavements. Besides, putting you and other passengers in grave danger.
