BMW India unveiled its premium luxury hatchback BMW 1 Series in India in the year 2013. The famous German luxury brand launched its cheapest car to cater the emerging demand for entry-level premium hatchbacks in the country. Moreover, in 2015 BMW unleashed its first facelift model, which continued for next two years. But due to dwindling sales numbers (since inception) it was discontinued in 2017. The top class luxury hatch was exclusively engineered to attract both, drivers with a knack for performance and the price-conscious elite minds. Despite less competition in the segment and economic price label, 1 Series hatchback was unable to generate desired sales results. The 5-door model offered was offered in as many as four variants – BMW 1 Series 116i, BMW 1 Series 118d, BMW 1 Series 118d Sport Line and BMW 1 Series 118d Sport Plus. Out of many, one of the reasons for this demur has been BMW 1 Series’ inadequate promotions and meagre coverage. Since its discontinuation, there have been speculations doing rounds about the introduction of 1 Series-based sedan in India.
BMW 1 Series Tyres
BMW 1 Series hatchback was primarily targeted towards the luxury compact car lovers, who also desired performance. Among the four trims BMW 1 Series 116i, BMW 1 Series 118d and BMW 1 Series 118d Sport Line were shod with 205/55 R 16 tubeless tyres, while the more performance-focused trim in the form of BMW 1 Series 118d Sport Plus sported 225/45 R 17 tubeless radial tyres.

The most compact offering from the Bavarian automaker was available in a solo variant. BMW 1 Series was directly pitted against the luxury likes of Mercedes Benz A Class, Volvo V40 and the Mini Cooper. The powerful engine was coupled to an 8-speed automatic transmission that conveyed the power to rear wheels only.
The 5-seater, 5-door hatch from BMW got all the signature character lines and patent grille of the German brand. Worldwide offered in 3-door and 5-door alternatives, the BMW 1 Series car possessed a rear that was similar to the 3-Series along with tail lamps, which were relatively small compared to the sedan sibling.
Made available in 8 color options i.e. Alpine White (non-metallic), Deep Sea Blue, Mineral Grey, Black Sapphire, Glacier Silver, Valencia Orange, the extensive feature list comprised of BMW’s iDrive system with a 7-inch HD LCD display, start and stop function, driver side power seat with memory function, sunroof and others. Moreover, standard safety aspects included Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) including Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), Electronic vehicle immobilizer and crash sensor, ABS with EBD, dual airbags and rear parking sensors etc.
The 2.0L, 1995cc, twin-power turbo 4-cylinder diesel engine outpoured 150 PS of maximum power at 4000 rpm and 320 Nm of peak torque at 1500-3000 rpm. Out of four, the three variants are packed this higher capacity motor. On the other hand, the lower capacity mill, the 1.6L, 1598cc petrol engine produced 136 bhp of power at 4400 rpm together with peak torque of 220 Nm at 1350 rpm. Both the engines were mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Both the engines were frugal enough to deliver a good certified fuel efficiency of 16.28 kmpl (petrol) and 20.58 kmpl (diesel).
