American Process Inc. and Aditya Birla Group’s Birla Carbon recently joined hands to explore the business and technical potential of combining Carbon Black and Nanocellulose to enhance the performance and sustainability of the tyres. Early evaluations have suggested the lowering of the rolling resistance of the tyres. As per Birla Carbon’s 2016 Sustainability report, increased commercialisation of the low rolling resistance is the main technological development focus area.
According to reports, carbon black constitutes 25% of the tyre weight with over 70% of the world’s carbon black used by the tyre industry. There has been raising voices within the tyre industry to improve the rolling resistance of the tyres, traction and fuel economy while maintaining tyre safety and affordability.
