Most of us think that traffic rules just mean rules related to putting the seat belt, wearing a helmet on a two-wheeler and adhering to the traffic lights. But it is not like this in reality. In our country India, there are plenty of traffic rules that are not so prominent among the people and hence they end up paying heavy fines for traffic violations they don’t even know about. The Motor Vehicle Act, 1988 describes some violations which majority of the Indian public is unaware of.
Here are 10 lesser-known traffic rules of India, if followed, can save you from trouble and putting a dent in your pocket:

- If someone has parked his vehicle improperly by which your entry or exit has been restricted, you can call the cops and the irritant driver would have to pay a fine of INR 100.
- There are times when your horn may not function properly. But do you know that having a malfunctioned horn will attract a penalty of INR 100 as per the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988. Horns are meant to warn the other drivers on the road to avoid mishap, so always make it sure that they are in working condition.
- In Kolkata and Chennai, if a driver fails to get his passenger the first aid in case of an accident then the provision for that is either 3 months jail imprisonment or INR 500 fine.
- In and around Delhi-NCR area, smoking inside your vehicle will attract a penalty of INR 100.
- In Kolkata, if someone parks his vehicle in front of a public utility such as bus stops, public toilets, etc., the person can be fined will INR 100
- We often borrow a car or bike from our friend in case of urgency. But do you know that in case if you are happened to be in Chennai, make sure whenever you borrow a car from your friend, he should be well aware of it. In case, if you fail to inform him and get caught by a cop, you may end up either paying a fine of INR 500 or spending 3 months in jail.
- Do you know that once you are fined for not wearing a helmet while riding a two-wheeler, you can continue to ride without a helmet until midnight of the same day without getting fine again? Because the challan slip of this offence is valid for the whole day. Having said that, please make sure that you are wearing a helmet while riding as it is essential for your safety.
- Under Sec 121 of Motor Vehicle Act, it is mandatory for a driver to signal his/her intentions to stop or take right or left turn. Failing to do the same can result in the driver’s prosecution.
- In Mumbai, having video devices or TV on vehicle’s dashboard is considered as a punishable offence with a penalty of INR 100 enforced upon the violator.
- We often leave our engine idle. But in Mumbai, doing this is a crime that carries a fine of INR 100.
