Nitrogen Or Air In Car Tyres: What’s Better For Your Vehicle?

nitrogen filling in tyres

A lot of people nowadays are going for ‘Nitrogen’ for their tyres than the normal traditional air. But, there is still a large number that doesn’t use it. But, have you wondered why this is so? Is Nitrogen really a better option than the normal air or it is the other way around? Let’s us try to find out how Nitrogen is different than normal air. The fact that it is a bit costly than normal air has also put few people in doubt whether to go for it or not.

The major reasons for the use of pure nitrogen in tyres are:

● Nitrogen molecules are larger than water, oxygen and most others things, so they drain slowly. This means the tyre pressure stays at a good range for a longer period of time. This, in turn, allows better handling, grip and braking performance to the driver for a longer period of time. And no doubt, this is the most important benefit that a driver will see after using Nitrogen in his tyres.

● The basic idea of Nitrogen gas is that it is cooler than compressed air and therefore is useful in any driving condition. Wondering why? Here it is, a cooler tyre means that while moving it goes through lesser stress levels. Moreover, due to the lesser temperature, the tread wear and tear is also slowed a bit. And thus, it also means that the tyres won’t develop fatigue or wear out as quickly as with normal air in them.

● Tires filled with Nitrogen also show less pressure change with temperature. That means more consistent inflation pressures during a race as tyres heat up.

● With Nitrogen, the tyre pressure will remain constant (for a very long time) saving you a small amount in fuel and tyre maintenance costs (in the longer run).

● Moreover, Nitrogen is free from oxygen and moisture. It doesn’t heat up as much and is less likely to cause corrosion to wheels.

● In addition to all the above-mentioned points, there’s a limit to its benefits. For people who drive their cars at high speeds regularly, say more than 80 kmph even Nitrogen filling will not be that impactful as at high speeds, not even nitrogen can sustain in tyres for a longer period.

So, now the next time you go for Nitrogen or Normal Air for your tyres you will have a clear idea what you should expect from them.
