One of the most essential feature, or in true words, a silent companion in your car cabin, which furnishes you with required calm throughout your driving is none other than your car air conditioner (AC). And one fine day you notice that it’s giving out warm or partially cold air, so is it the time to replace your car AC? Nope, but it’s time to go for an AC refill or recharge. AC recharge/refill is all about adding more refrigerant to the air conditioning system so that it starts to blow cold air again.

Completing this task at home on your own seems a bit chancy affair as it involves work with some hazardous liquid, and hence it is always recommended to opt for a professional. However, here we can learn how to use the AC recharge kits for this procedure, which is a safe alternative in comparison to the core AC refilling.

You will require:

o An air conditioning dispenser with trigger and low side gauge
o Meat thermometer
o Safety glasses and gloves
o Refrigerant (between 12-28 ounces, as per the vehicle requirement), although to be precise, the ounces information can be found on the underside of the hood.

The Process:

Remember: While performing any action under the hood it’s strongly advised to wear safety glasses.

Step 1: Switch on your AC, start your car and spin your AC to maximum speed.

Step 2: Check if the AC compressor is connected and engaging. The compressor performs rotation with the help of an accessory belt, while the accessory belt is responsible for converting the refrigerant from liquid to gas. The compressor comprises of a clutch at the end of it, and when the AC is on max, it should be spinning with the accessory belt. Hence, you need to check for these moving pulleys.

Step 3: If the clutch is connected it means the system is low on refrigerant, notably if the blowing air is a little cold. Now before putting in the refrigerant you need to test the pressure. On the other hand, if the clutch is unengaged this means that the AC is quite low on refrigerant or the compressor has crashed.

Step 4: Now fix the refill hose from the kit. For this, you just need to use the quick connect fitting, normally found on the end of refill hose, and press it down tightly until you listen to a click sound. Here you need to be very cautious with regards to the pulling if the trigger as it will discharge AC system refrigerant in the air.

Step 5: Start your car again, and before starting, ensure that the AC is set on max speed. Check the AC compressor engaging the clutch, after getting engaged, if low side pressure reads below 40PSI, it means AC is undercharged. It’s recommended to have reading as close to 40PSI as possible.

Step 6: Ease the refrigerant canister onto the refill hose. After the canister installation, hold it upright and press the trigger for 5-10 seconds in order to add liquid refrigerant to the system. Now release the trigger, examine the pressure, so that you are aware of not overcharging the system, continue till you reach close to 40PSI as possible.

Step 7: After this, get inside the car. Insert the thermometer into one of the driver’s side AC vents and observe the temperature. Remember that a totally charged AC system will give out air that is more or less 28 degrees cold, depending upon the car condition.

If your car refrigerant is performing low in the beginning, it means that there are minute chances of system leakage. AC repairs and its related issues need special care and should be performed by professionals only. Here at tyremarket.com our team of specialized professionals is happy to help you with car AC related services.
