Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association (ATMA) on the occasion of World Environment Day has reached out to motorists and drivers urging them to take proper care of tyres in order to help the environment.

As per the Director General of ATMA, Rajiv Budhraja, at present tyres account for around 20%-30% of fuel consumption, therefore by taking proper care and maintenance of tyres we can help in saving the environment. Since the tyre pressure is the most neglected part in a vehicle, therefore, on World Environment Day, we are sensitizing the motorists and drivers on the importance of appropriate tyre maintenance.

Engaging with the drivers at public places, ATMA’s ambassadors drew the attention of the public to the importance of proper tyre inflation in vehicles. They also distributed booklets among the public on “how to take care of tyre”.

More than 100 service engineers from ATMA member companies have carried out inspection drive in different cities including Greater Noida, Mysuru, New Delhi, Chandigarh, and Chennai among others and have found that over 50% of the cars that were running on the roads have not maintained proper tyre pressure. This was one of the largest exercises carried out by ATMA. It also involved a series of Tyre Safety Clinics over one year catering more than 22,000 tyres.

Besides improving fuel economy, proper tyre pressure is also vital for the overall safety of a vehicle. In a country like India, where the temperature crosses 40 degrees in majority of the areas, checking tyre pressure before starting a journey becomes essential, but unfortunately is very often ignored. Due to under inflation, there is an increase in the surface area of a tyre (contact patch) which leads to more friction and generation of heat, which in turn, could lead to tyre failure. In the same way, over inflation in the summer leads air in the tyre to expand, thereby leading to wear and tear of tyre.

The Director-General of ATMA further added that they are planning to run the campaign “Maintain Tyres: Help Environment” round the year throughout the country. He also told the media that in line with this objective, an animated film has been made and launched on the social media for spreading this message to the masses.

ATMA members who participated in Tyre Safety campaigns include tyre manufacturers such as Birla Tyres, Goodyear India, CEAT Tyres, JK Tyre, Bridgestone India, Michelin, Continental India, Yokohama, MRF Tyres and TVS Tyres.
