Pirelli P Zero Tyre Overview
Pirelli is one company that sits at the very pinnacle of the motor racing industry when it comes to tyres. The Milan-based manufacturer is the chief supplier for the Formula 1 racing series and is also the exclusive supplier of tyres for the World Superbike since 2004. So the company essentially has the capability to translate the technology into its road tyres and not just any road tyre but the one that specifically serves performance cars. Funnily enough, the tyre is named as the P Zero, but we can assure you that there’s not a single area where this tyre scores zero. The tyre is an absolute masterclass when it comes to acceleration, achieving high speeds and changing direction at speeds that can even give a serious jerk to some delicate necks.
To give you an idea, cars such as the Lamborghini Aventador and the Pagani Huayra are equipped with P Zero as a standard fitment and the tyres are specifically designed to suit these specific cars. However, like any other product, it does have some shortcomings and comes with own specification of use and care. The tyre’s entire size range is priced between ₹ 16,233 to ₹ 72,136, which makes it one of the most premium priced tyres available in the country. Let’s check out what makes the P Zero one of the best performance tyres in the world.
Pirelli P Zero Tyre Compound
The P Zero is made from a very special compound that is produced by blending silica and carbon black as the main ingredients. As a performance tyre, one expects competitive grip out of it at all times whether the tyre is cold or warm and the carbon black ensures that the P Zero remains grippy even when the tyre is cold. It also adds up to a very consistently performing tyre throughout its life. Although there are different levels of softness in different types of P Zeros, the tyre is still dominantly soft compared to other tyres.
Pirelli P Zero Tyre Construction
The P Zero employs radial ply construction and an advanced design approach for the tread pattern that enhances the contact patch’s effectiveness. Just as with any other tyre, the tread construction of the P Zero can be divided into three different parts — the shoulder blocks, the central rib pattern and the central grooves.
The shoulder blocks provide stability during high speed turns, while the central rib pattern facilitates steering and acceleration. The tread design incorporates an S-Shape pattern which makes up for an optimal pressure distribution. The three deep grooves take care of water expulsion along with straight-line stability.
It just doesn’t end here and the P Zero is also available with the run-flat technology. With this, the side walls are strengthened in such a way that the tyre will manage to get you home if the pressure drops due to punctures. Pirelli calls the system as the self-supporting system and has fitted the sidewalls with specific enhancements in such a way that the flat tyre will support the tyre even under the influence of transverse and lateral forces.
Pirelli P Zero Tyre Performance
The tyre is aimed at high-performance car buyers and is tuned to deliver superior hot weather results. This makes it ideal for Indian driving conditions as our average temperatures hover towards the upper end of the thermometer. The tyres keep the car absolutely glued to the ground in hot/dry weather and deliver more than satisfactory results in wet weather. However, since it’s a performance tyre, dirt spilt roads do upset it a bit and it does require clean tarmac to deliver its maximum potential.
A drawback with a wide performance tyre is road noise; a wider tyre inevitably makes more noise. However, to minimize its effects Pirelli has employed PNCS (Pirelli Noise Cancellation System). Each P Zero has a noise absorbing foam on the inside of the tyre which dampens excessive noise to provide quiet running. The tyre is also fairly resistant to puncture; thanks to its “Seal Inside” technology. The inner part of the tyre has a liquid sealing solution that promises to seal the punctures by as much as 85 percent reducing the chances of a quick pressure loss.

Pirelli P Zero Tyre Fuel Efficiency
Despite being a performance oriented tyre, the P Zero has a decent fuel efficiency rating of 4 out of 5. However, it’s not justified to expect an exceptional mileage from a tyre whose sole purpose is to make your car faster and the P Zero is pretty good at that.
Pirelli P Zero Tyre Warranty
Pirelli P Zero comes with a one-year standard manufacturer warranty. The company will replace your tyre if the tyre becomes unusable due to manufacturing defects and for anomalies arising because of the workmanship. Customers can replace their tyres at an authorised dealership or can also check at Pirelli’s official website by inputting the DOT number of their tyre in the search box to see the eligibility for warranty after purchase.
Pirelli P Zero Tyre Speed Rating
The majority of P Zero tyres available in the country are ‘Y’ rated, which means they can safely operate at a speed of 300kmph. Other than this, there are ‘W’ rated P Zero tyres also available, which translates to a safe operating speed of 270kmph. The ‘Y’ rating is available with higher size P Zeros, whereas the ‘W’ rating is available with lower sized ones.
Pirelli P Zero Tyre Competitors
The actual competitors of the P Zero are Michelin Pilot Super Sport and Goodyear Eagle F1. However, due to their unavailability in India, the Apollo Aspire, the Bridgestone Potenza S001 and the Eagle NCT5 can be considered as some options.
