Government Drafting Norms On Fuel Efficiency For Heavy Vehicles

Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Dharmendra Pradhan said that a draft norm on fuel efficiency for heavy vehicles will be released on 1st April, 2017 which will aim at reducing the carbon emissions and saving hydrocarbon consumption. This move is set to address the emissions from freight traffic, which is also a part of the country’s climate change strategy.

Pradhan, while launching an awareness creation drive on fuel conservation organised by the Petroleum Conservation Research Association, said that if the 150 million 2-wheelers and more than 30 million 3-wheelers currently on the roads in the country decide to turn off the vehicle engines at traffic signals, about 2% of fuel consumption can be saved which will convert into around Rs.14,000 crore of savings. This could be used for developmental projects in various fields. Recently, Government of India has launched Ujjwala scheme under which 16 million households have been given LPG connections. This is one of the welfare schemes by the government which is funded from the resources by raising taxes on petrol and diesel and by encouraging the financially fortunate households to give up the cooking fuel subsidy.

He further told reporters that although global oil prices have risen in the recent weeks, there was no returning back to the subsidy system for petrol and diesel. But the government may resort to the cutting of excise duties on the fuel if rate hike “pinched hard”. Pradhan added that while companies passed on about half of the savings from falling crude oil price in world markets to consumers, the remaining was recouped by the government by raising duties on fuel to fund infrastructure and social projects.
