South Asia’s first butyl rubber halogenation unit is all set to start at RIL’s integrated petrochemical site in Jamnagar, Gujarat. The Russian petrochemical giant, SIBUR has signed a pact with Indian company Reliance (RIL) to set up a new rubber plant in India’s prosperous western state of Gujarat. The Jamnagar plant will have an annual capacity of 60,000 metric tonnes. A MoU was signed by the two companies related to this plant at the recently concluded Vibrant Gujarat Summit last week at Gandhinagar.

A joint venture (JV) was formed in February, 2012 in which RIL and Sibur have 74.9 percent and 25.1 percent stake, respectively. The production of rubber will take place under this JV called, Reliance Sibur Elastomers Private Limited (RSEPL). This JV also owns a butyl rubber plant (currently under construction at the same venue) with an annual capacity of 1,20,000 MT. The aim is to produce necessary butyl rubber for the halogenation unit.

A per Reliance Industries Executive Director, Nikhil Meswani, “The annual aggregate growth for halogenated butyl rubber will grow by 8 to 10 per cent over the next few years”. On the other hand, Sibur’s Chief Executive, Dmitry Konov was of the view that “India is an attractive destination for investment in view of the growing demand for synthetic rubber”. He also thanked the Government of Gujarat for providing amicable environment for the Russian company to work in this JV project.
