Types of Run Flat Tyres and How do they work?
For you to understand in simple terms, there are primarily two types of run flat tyres; Self-supporting and Support ring or Auxiliary system.
The self-supporting run flat tyres have tougher and stiffer rubber which can carry the vehicle temporarily to the nearest destination even if the air pressure is very low. The reinforced sidewall construction will allow the vehicle to run on a specified speed recommended by the manufacturer. These types of tyres can be seen in passenger vehicles and light trucks.
The support ring or auxiliary system has an additional support ring inside the tyre which can carry the weight of the vehicle for long distances in case of air loss or complete deflation. These type of tyres can be seen in executive class vehicles, military and armoured vehicles.
But run flat tyres are totally dependent on Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, as without this technology you won’t be able to know the tyre pressure loss.
Benefits of Run Flat Tyres
- These tyres provide stability to the vehicle. So in the case of deflation or tyre puncture, the driver is able to control the vehicle more effectively.
- Secondly, if tyre blowout happens in the middle of the road, then you are in a tight spot. This is the biggest advantage of using run flat tyres as you don’t have to change them on a busy highway.
- Thirdly, if your car has run flat tyres, you don’t have to carry a spare tyre. This saves you money and provides you extra boot space as well, which means you can carry more stuff on your journeys.
Due to increasing concern of the consumers on safety aspects, it seems one day run flat tyres will become a standard equipment in vehicles.
