Sources indicate that with the arrival of monsoon, the number of accidents also increase; courtesy wet roads. In a country as populous as ours, the road safety is an important aspect of everyday life. The below-mentioned monsoon driving tips would significantly reduce any potential risks that you may encounter this rainy season and help you drive better.

  1. Think before embarking on a journey

Don’t just take your car out on the wet road, it is advisable to wait and access the conditions. If it’s not so urgent and the road is too wet with heavy rains, it’s better to wait for some time for the conditions to get better, and then drive the car.

  2. Usage of headlights

During rain, the visibility gets low and it’s difficult to spot a vehicle coming your way. So it is recommended to keep your car’s headlights ON. Also, make sure that both the headlamps are in working condition and adjusted properly so that the visibility is clear and the headlamps point in the right direction. In cities, always keep the beam low so that it is not blinding the people coming from the opposite direction and you get a proper view of the potholes and speed breakers.

  3. Avoid using cruise control

Cruise control is good when you have to drive at the same speed for a long time on a normal road, but it is advisable to turn OFF the cruise control in wet conditions as driving in a normal mode gives you a better feel of the road and allows you to manoeuvre the car as per the situation.

  4. Keep a safe distance

When it is raining, it is recommended to keep a safe (more than what you keep normally) distance between the vehicles. Because there is a high probability that in emergency braking, the braking distance would increase due to skidding of the vehicle. Having a safe distance will make sure vehicles don’t hit each other.

  5. Keep eyes on the turns

Maximum road accidents happen due to sharp and narrow turns. Taking fast turn on a wet road can cause tyres to skid thereby making the car lose its control. At sharp turning points, slow down first and then take a turn. Using horn on turns is recommended as it alerts the drivers coming from the opposite side of the turn.

  6. Be more conscious while driving

When on the driver’s seat, stay more focused. It happens many times during the rain that at the very last minute a random pedestrian, animal, etc. pops in the driver’s visibility radar all of a sudden. In such scenarios, the reaction time for the driver is quite less and chances of accidents or collisions are high. Do not drive if you are not feeling easy to drive, reaching somewhere late than not reaching ever is always better.

  7. Replace the wiper blades

It is advisable to replace the wiper blades every six months to a year, or as soon as you start noticing the difference in visibility.

Happy Monsoon!

  • Having a day out during monsoon is very exciting one. However, you have to embrace few precautions for the sake of your vehicle. You have to keep fit your wiper blades and lights. You should have to repair your air conditioner. It may sound different, but it is necessary as during the days, the front glass of the vehicle gets filled with vapor, which obstruct you from seeing the front lane. The window glasses should be maintained properly so that the rain water cannot get into the vehicle.
