Every year extreme cold and wet season damage Indian roads leading to the creation of potholes thus placing great strain on cars specifically on their wheels, tyres and suspension. Everyday driving on these damaged roads can cause damage to vehicle’s wheels, tyres, suspension and ultimately its alignment. And therefore, it becomes vital to check that the car’s wheel alignment is fine and it is safe to drive.
Improper wheel alignment can cause untimely tyre wear, decreased fuel consumption because of increased rolling resistance and ultimately places a strain on the suspensions system which can be a very costly affair to settle.
By alignment, we mean adjustment of a vehicle’s suspension. It is not just an adjustment of tyres or wheels as commonly perceived by people. The best way to proper alignment is adjusting the angles of the tyres which affect how they make contact with the road.
So the question arises how will you know if the vehicle’s wheels are misaligned? There are ways to find out, let’s see.
1) Pulling Right or Left
First get your car on a smooth surface with no traffic, drive slow and take your hands off the steering wheel for a little while. If the car goes well without any sideways movement, it’s fine and if it doesn’t, then you may need a wheel alignment service for it.
2) Checking The Logo
The manufacturer’s logo is always there in the centre of the steering wheel and it must look perfectly horizontal when one is driving in the straight line. If it is not in horizontal condition and looks slightly deviated while driving in a straight line then it time to check the wheel alignment.
3) Worn Tyres on One Edge
Having uneven tyre wear is the clearest sign of misaligned wheels. Increased wear on the inside edge compared to the outside edge is the sign that the car need professional help.
4) Problems While Taking Turns
Whenever one takes a turn, the steering wheel should ideally return to centre promptly, without feeling loose or difficult to control. If it doesn’t then you may have a loose steering or suspensions. But in most cases you probably just need an alignment to fix this issue.
5) Crab Walking Technique
Get out of your car and ask someone to drive it while you should look at it from the back. If you noticed that it is not going in a proper way or it is looking tilted to left or right then you need to adjust the alignment of your vehicle.
Wheel alignment is very important in order to increase your tyres’ life. To get better comfort and performance out of your car, the steering and suspension of all four wheels need to be checked and measured every year.
