DIY – How To Install Valve Stems On Tyres

The routine check of tyre air pressure is much essential for car maintenance. Generally, after getting all the tyres topped off with the air, in a couple of day’s time, we realise that one side of the car is relatively low. How does this happen? In the majority of instances, it’s because of the faulty valve stem that triggers the gradual air leakage from the tyres.

So how do we get rid of it? Simple, replace the leaking tyre valve stem with a new one.  Don’t worry, fixing the tire stem is not a herculean task and you can do it by yourself in few minutes alongside saving some bucks. So, here are some simple steps that can be followed for the valve stem replacement of your car tyre.

Step 1

How to install valve stems on tyres

First and foremost step is to park your car on a flat ground and ensure that you have engaged the parking brake (hand brake). For more safety and to avoid the movement of the car in any case, place stones or other heavy objects on the opposite sides of the tyre.

Step 2

tyre loose lug nut

Now loose the lug nuts with the help of a tyre iron, but make sure that do not remove them completely as you have to lift up the car. It’s time now to grab the jack and lift the car until you see the car wheel being held completely off the ground.

Step 3

It’s time now to remove the lug nuts completely.  For this, you can use the tyre iron or else, if you find them loose enough, remove them with your hands. Now slide the wheel off the wheel studs and lay it flat on the ground.

Step 4

tyre valve caps

Unscrew the tyre valve cap and press the small needle to deflate the remaining air from the tyre.

Step 5

car tyre bead breaking

Once you are done with deflating, break the bead of the tyre by placing the crowbar in between the rim and the tyre. Here you have to do a little effort in order to separate the tyre from the rim. Just hold the crowbar and hit at the end of it repeatedly with a hammer until you hear a cracking sound. Now loose the tyre from the rim by using the crowbar.

Step 6

removing valve stem with plier

Pull out the faulty tire stem by using a plier. After lubricating the new valve stem with some dish soap, pass it through the valve stem hole of the rim/alloy i.e. from the inner side to the outer side of the rim/alloy. Now you have to lock the valve stem in place, therefore, simply hold the mouth of the valve stem using the plier and then pull it towards you. The valve stem will lock at its place. Remember, before holding the mouth of the valve stem with plier make sure that you wrap the valve stem mouth with a thick leather piece so that no harm is caused to the brass threads of the valve stem.

Step 7

Lastly, place the tyre back on the rim/alloy and then lock it with the lug nuts. Make sure that you don’t tighten them completely. Now re-inflate the tyre using air compressor and check the appropriate level. Tighten the lug nuts fully and voila! You are done.
