Here’s a strange truth: people will research a phone for three weeks and then buy tyres based entirely on whatever the shop fellow points at. The tyres are the only thing actually touching the road. And yet the side of a tyre, where all the useful information literally lives, might as well be written in another language for how often it gets read.

 

Part of that is the tyre’s own fault. The sidewall looks intimidating. Numbers, letters, a little mountain, a code starting with “DOT” that sounds official and slightly threatening. It feels like something only a mechanic is meant to understand.

 

It isn’t. It’s just been explained badly for years. So here’s the whole thing, plainly.

 

That Long Number Is Five Things In One

Find the big code on the sidewall. Something like 205/55 R16 91V. Looks like one unit. It’s five.

 

205 is the width in millimetres, at the widest part of the tyre. The official term is nominal section width, but really, it’s just how fat the tyre is.

 

55 is the one that quietly confuses half the country. It’s not a width, it’s a ratio. It tells you how tall the sidewall is, as a percentage of that width. So here, the sidewall is about 55% of 205mm tall. Low number, short stiff sidewall, sportier feel. High number, taller sidewall, softer ride over potholes. That’s genuinely the whole difference, and it’s why two tyres that fit the same wheel can feel completely different to drive on.

 

R means radial. Michelin invented this, actually. It pairs a flexible sidewall with a tough tread, which is what makes radial tyres last longer and sip less fuel than the older designs nobody misses.

 

16 is the wheel size in inches. The tyre fits a 16-inch rim. Nothing clever hiding here.

 

91V is the bit everyone’s eyes slide right past, and it’s a shame, because it’s important. 91 is the load index, the maximum weight that one tyre can carry. V is the speed rating, the fastest it’s built to go while carrying that weight. Both are codes that point to exact figures on a chart. And this is the part that actually saves people money and trouble: a new tyre has to match or beat both those numbers, not just look like the same size. “Same size” and “same rating” are not the same sentence, no matter how confidently it’s said across a counter.

 

That Extra Letter Up Front

Sometimes there’s a letter before the size, like P205/55R16. “P” means passenger tyre, for cars and SUVs carrying people. “LT” means Light Truck, built stiffer for towing and heavy loads. They are not casual substitutes for each other. Putting an LT where a P belongs isn’t a minor swap, it’s a different animal in the same size of skin.

 

The OEM marking hiding in plain sight

Some tyres carry a small letter or symbol that most people walk right past – but it matters enormously if you own a specific car. These are manufacturer approvals, stamped on after the tyre passed that carmaker’s own tests. The common ones: * (star) for BMW, MO for Mercedes-Benz, AO for Audi/Volkswagen, and RO1 for Audi Sport. A BMW-spec tyre with a star is tuned differently – noise absorption, handling balance – than the same size without it. Fitting a non-starred tyre on a BMW that originally came with one won’t cause disaster, but it will change how the car feels, and possibly affect the run-flat behaviour some models depend on. The replacement should carry the same mark.

 

The Code Worth Checking Before You Pay a Rupee

This is the one that actually catches people out, because tyres can sit in storage a long time before they reach a showroom. A tyre can be “new” in the sense that nobody’s driven it, and old in every way that matters.

 

Every Michelin tyre has a DOT code, and inside it sits a four-digit number that gives away its birthday. First two digits, the week. Last two, the year. So a code ending in 2524 means it was built in the 25th week of 2024. It’s right there. It’s just never pointed out, so nobody looks.

 

And the reason it matters isn’t fussiness, it’s chemistry. Michelin says to inspect any tyre closely once it’s five years past that date, and to replace it by ten years, no matter how good the tread looks. Rubber ages whether it’s rolling or sitting still. It dries, it stiffens, it loses the very flexibility that keeps a car planted. A tyre can look showroom-fresh and already be living on borrowed time underneath. Two minutes checking that little number is worth more than most people would ever guess.

 

The Two Symbols Worth Actually Learning

There’s a tiny Michelin Man stamped at a few spots around the sidewall, and no, it’s not decoration. It marks exactly where the wear indicators sit. Those indicators are small raised bars down inside the tread grooves, and the moment the tread wears flat with them, the tyre’s hit its safe limit. No squinting, no guessing whether it “looks bald enough.” The tyre tells you itself.

 

Then there’s the little mountain with a snowflake in it, and this one’s worth getting right, because people constantly mix it up with the plainer “M+S” letters. The difference is real. M+S just means the maker had mud and snow in mind when designing it, with no test behind the claim. The Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake is earned, because the tyre had to pass an actual snow traction test to wear it, and that’s the mark that genuinely counts for winter. Anyone driving through real cold, the hill stretches, the high passes, should be hunting for the mountain, not settling for the letters.

 

A Few Last Things Worth Spotting

You’ll sometimes see XL, HL, or “Reinforced” near the size. That just means the tyre carries more weight than a standard one of the same size, which matters more and more these days, especially for EVs lugging a heavy battery down low. If a car came with one of these, the replacement needs the same marking, not an ordinary tyre that happens to share the dimensions.

 

You may also see the letters RF, RFT, ROF, or SSR on the sidewall – all different manufacturers’ ways of saying the same thing: run-flat. These tyres are designed to keep driving for a short distance, typically around 80 km, at reduced speed after a puncture. They’re common on cars that don’t come with a spare. The catch is that run-flat tyres need to be replaced as a set in most cases, and you cannot simply swap in a conventional tyre if the car’s tyre pressure monitoring system and suspension were calibrated around the run-flat’s stiffer construction. It matters more than it sounds.

 

And then there’s MAX LOAD and MAX PRESS, printed nice and bold, and constantly misread. These are not your everyday settings. They’re the absolute ceiling the tyre can handle, not what any particular car should run day to day. The number that actually belongs in a given car lives in its manual, or on a sticker inside the driver’s door. That’s the one to trust. Not the big print on the rubber.

 

Why Any of This Is Worth Two Minutes

Nobody needs to memorise this. It’s more like knowing where the stopcock is in a house, useless ninety-nine days out of a hundred, and quietly priceless on the hundredth.

 

The hundredth day is this: standing in a shop, being handed a tyre with full confidence that it’s “the right one,” and being able to bend down, read the wall, and know whether that’s true. That’s all these markings were ever for. They look like they exist to keep ordinary people out. They actually exist so that anyone willing to spend two minutes can walk away certain about what’s going under their car, instead of just hoping the person across the counter had their best interests at heart.
