Tata Motors has created an impressive portfolio with its comprehensive range of cars, buses, trucks, defence vehicles and more. They stepped into the automobile industry in 1954 and since then witnessed a lot of ups and downs, eventually becoming a leading automobile manufacturer in the world. As India’s largest automobile company, Tata Motors has operations in many other countries such as UK, South Korea, Indonesia, Thailand etc. striving to pioneer new products that fire the imagination of GenNext customers.

The well-known automobile brand started creating ripples in 1986 with the launch of the Tata 407 Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV). The reliability and performance of the vehicle made it popular not only in India but also in several other countries around the globe. Let’s look at a few milestones that the company achieved so far:

In 1988, Tata Motors entered into passenger vehicle market.

In 1991, Tata Motors launched Tata Sierra and also entered into a Joint Venture with Nitol Motors. The two set up NITA Company Ltd., first assembly set-up of the company outside India. As years passed by, Tata Motors grew its assembly operations in Bangladesh, South Africa, Myanmar, Vietnam, Kenya, Senegal, Nigeria & Tunisia.

In 1992, Tata launched Tata Estate – a station wagon whose design was based on the earlier Tata Mobile.

In 1993, Tata Motors entered into a Joint Venture with Cummins Engine Inc. This tie-up helped Tata Motors to introduce powerful diesel engines that emit lesser carbon.

In 1994, they came out with Tata Sumo, a 5 door SUV that made quite a name in the market.

In 1998, Tata launched ‘Indica’, the first fully indigenous Indian passenger car. They also launched Tata Safari in the same year.

In 2004, Tata Motors made to the New York Stock Exchange. That’s not it; the company also acquired Daewoo, a South Korean truck manufacturing company. Together, they unveiled Tata World Truck range for sale in South Korea, South Africa, SAARC nations and the Middle East.

In 2006, the aspirations were rising and as a result, Tata Motors joined hands with the Brazil-based Marcopolo S.A, launching the Tata Marcopolo Bus in the coming years.

In 2008, Tata Motors Thailand came into existence, its first national sales company. This was the year in which Tata launched the world’s cheapest car – Tata Nano and also purchased Jaguar Land Rover from Ford.

In 2009, acquiring the Spanish bus and coach manufacturer Hispano Carrocera, Tata Motors’ Starbus and Globus range of buses hit the road.

In 2011, Tata Motors Indonesia established as a fully owned subsidiary of Tata Motors

In 2012, the company launched Tata Prima – its next-generation platform of heavy trucks in the markets around the world. This year Tata also announced that it would invest 6 billion rupees in the development of Futuristic Infantry Combat Vehicles in collaboration with DRDO.

In 2014, automobile giant launched its new platform for light trucks and buses, Tata Ultra. It also introduced ‘T1 Prima Truck Racing Championship”, the first truck racing championship in India.

In 2015, Tata took the education of its nation’s youth in its hands and started SkillPro. It was a unique skill development programme that trained aspiring youth to become skilled professionals, making them employment ready. This very year, Lionel Messi became Tata’s global brand ambassador to promote and endorse its passenger vehicles globally.

In 2016, Bollywood’s superstar, Akshay Kumar became Tata’s brand ambassador for its commercial vehicles range.

In 2017, Tata Motor announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Volkswagen. It stated that Tata Motors will develop vehicles for India’s domestic Market.

In 2018, Tata Motors sold its aerospace and defence business to another Tata Group entity, known as Tata Advanced Systems. The company also became the first automaker to cross the 1 million sales mark and secured 16th position in the world’s largest light vehicles company list.

A company that was usually known for its commercial vehicle stepped out of its boundaries and worked hard to make its name in the light vehicles sector. As a result, Tata Motors became the third fastest growing brand among the top 20 automobile companies around the world. For years, it was below 5% growth in brand value but it surged ahead and reached 9% in brand value. Today, Tata’s brand value is higher than Airtel and Infosys. Tata’s various vehicles such as Indica, Indigo, Vista, Manza, Aria, Bolt, Safari Storme, Tiago, GenX Nano, Sumo, Tigor, Zest, Nexon and Hexa are sold not just in India but in many other countries of Africa, APAC and Latin America, while those of Jaguar and Land Rover are available in Europe.

If that’s not inspiring growth, I don’t know what is.

Monsoon is not far behind, while some parts of India are already witnessing the pre-monsoon showers. Rains do bring down the temperature, making your ride more pleasant but it can wreak havoc on vehicles. The roads get wet, making it tricking to drive and the heavy downpour can take away the visibility. But a well-prepared car can face all these sudden changes heroically. If you too want your rides to be enjoyable one during the rainy season, listed below are some essential that you must take care of in advance.

Check Your Tyres

The most important thing that will protect you from slippery, rain washed roads are your car’s tyre. They must be in good condition to give you the grip that you need while driving and going around the turns. If the tread depth is not good enough they are likely to skid over slippery surfaces. Also, be certain that you check the tyre’s air pressure as they lose it quickly during the rainy season. If the tyres need to be changed, don’t just replace the front ones but take care of the rear ones too. With the regular check, you will ensure better driving control.

Be Wise With The Car Cover

If you park your car in the garage or under the shed, make sure you wrap it up with a cover. This is an old fashioned way but works well as the cover will not let any outside element to gain access to your car that could further harm the body. If there’s any leakage, the cover will also stop the water from going into the interiors, spoiling the seat and other stuff.

But if you park your car out in the open, avoid using a car cover. The reason being, the cover tends to stick to the car’s body due to moisture but when the sun shines again, drying the car, the cover will stick to the car’s clear coat. It can actually peel off the paint when you will take off the cover. Surely, you wouldn’t like that.

Get the AC Serviced

To make sure that your car is fully prepared to face the downpour, get the car AC serviced. This is because the AC filters work overtime to reduce the moisture. The grime particles also enter the car so you need to be sure that the AC is in its best shape so that it doesn’t get harmed.

Keep The Headlamps Clean

Driving a car in the rain and especially during the night is not easy. You need to have a clear vision of what’s coming to avoid any accidents. If your headlamps are not clean, they will not give you clear visibility. You can clean them by rubbing white toothpaste (only) in a circular motion. Then, take a wet cloth to wipe the paste off and you will see sparkling new headlamp, all set to face the rain, fog and moisture.

Don’t Forget The Interiors

You might not realize it but the interiors of your car get the worst burn during monsoon. Without thinking much, we expose the inside of the car to moisture by wet and muddy shoes and wet clothes. It further makes your car smelly and promotes bacterial growth. Use old newspaper to keep the water and muck off the carpets. They are cheap and instantly absorb the water. It also saves you from the hassle of cleaning the carpets and mats again and again.

Along with these tips, check your windshield washer fluid, carry a spare tyre for emergencies, check the brakes, use a wax polish so that water doesn’t sit on your car and get the car battery checked. Also, drive slowly than usual and stick to the middle lane.

These days’ brands are capitalising and promoting their message by creating engaging TVCs and ads, which are being loved by the masses. Gone are the times when the ads were merely a piece of information broadcast of a product that tells about its features, specifications, and benefits. The conventional is now out, and the new trend of emotional storytelling has gained momentum.

We all remember the Samsung ad knitted across their first personalized AI (artificial intelligence) voice assistant that can assist Motor Neuron Disease patients. The ad depicted very emotional mother-daughter bond. And who can forget the Google Search ‘reunion’ ad themed around India-Pakistan partition, where Google brings together Baldev Mehra of India and his childhood friend Yusuf from Pakistan after a period of six decades.

On similar lines, at present and in the past, even the automobile manufacturers have conceived ads that unify family, friends, and people of our great nation. So here we have listed top 5 emotionally charged TVCs from the automotive industry. Let’s have a quick glimpse at them.

Bajaj Auto https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67u43tX6wpc

None of us can fail to remember the Bajaj Auto TVC from the 90’s that took the nation by storm. The ad with famous jingle ‘Hamara Bajaj’ bonded the people of the nation with pride for being one of the very first two-wheeler brands to design and develop capable two-wheelers products in India. The ad featured different Bajaj models focussing on diverse class of consumers and their needs. In those days Bajaj creations, especially Bajaj scooters, enjoyed the status of no less than a family member in the household.

Hyundai Motors https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qSZ4h7YSGnQ

The TVC, under the nostalgic ‘Brilliant Moments’ campaign, was released to commemorate the two highly successful decades of Hyundai Motor India. Titled as ‘Deal’, the ad portrays a family’s emotional attachment with the old Hyundai Accent and unforgettable memories that father and son share with Hyundai’s first sedan car. Unbreakable bond and childhood memories with the Accent desists the son from selling it to the buyer, which concludes the ad.

Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJ1kmqmtkFA

The ad or say 4.5 minute short film revolves around Mahindra e2o electric car and features Sanjay Mishra, acclaimed Bollywood actor, and TVF Pitchers famed Naveen Kasturia. Titled ‘Lift’ the ad is a part of ‘Driven by Goodness’ campaign by Mahindra. The ad begins with Naveen driving on the highway and is getting late to a birthday party. He’s stopped by Sanjay Mishra, who wants a lift but is not asking for it, instead unwillingly gets into Naveen’s e2o. On the way, Mishra does every possible thing to irritate him, who after tolerating enough asks Mishra to get down midway. Then follows a call on Naveen’s phone, which induces him to literally go out of the way and search for Mishra.

Maruti Suzuki https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rt1Z0nNIRbo

The emotional and heart touching ad spins around ‘Pehni Kya’, a road safety initiative by Maruti Suzuki. Every morning a 10-12-year-old son ‘Bunty’ does every possible thing to stop his father from driving the car out of their home premises. Once Bunty fits a sponge ball in the car exhaust, the other time he punctures/deflates the tyre, etc. However, he’s still unable to prevent his father from taking the car out and meanwhile irritated with his mischievous attitude one day his annoyed father asks him for an explanation for all these troubles. The answer from Bunty stuns his father, who then pledges for safety.

Hyundai Motors https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UgwaO8JkXYU

The ad opens with an elderly uncle driving a Grand i10 sees that the glove box is constantly popping open. He drives into a Hyundai Service Point, where the Service Associate (SA) takes the note of glove box problem and is also asked for a car wash. Amid their conversation uncle receives a call where he shows gratitude to the other person on the phone and informs him about a small celebration tonight. The SA hears this and asks his front office person to get uncle’s customer profile and learns about his anniversary today. He places a gift in the car’s glove box and leaves uncle astonished with this pleasant surprise for his wife.

Do you know car driving? If you ask this question to ten people in the country the majority will have a positive answer to it. However, when you take the co-passenger seat next to them you will notice that they struggle even with basic etiquettes of driving a vehicle. One must understand that as a driver you hold a lot of responsibilities with respect to the safety of the occupants, pedestrians and other vehicles on the road.

So here we are listing 10 poor driving practices witnessed by many Indian car drivers. If you find any of the mentioned dismal habits surrounding you, make sure you iron it out at the earliest to ensure safe Indian roads for yourself and your loved ones.

Clutch Riding

If you own a car with manual transmission (MT) gearbox you need to ascertain that you are not riding the clutch whenever you are behind the wheel. If you manoeuvre the car via a clutch and accelerate high it will lead to the rapid deterioration of the pressure plates, clutch cable and clutch plates. Alongside, you also need to shun the habit of driving the car with the foot on the clutch pedal. Likewise, use handbrake all through uphill as clutch solely cannot be termed as a reliable option.

Switch-off Engine Downhill

Some drivers, or say, fuel-conscious drivers have this awful habit of putting off the engine when travelling downhill. This is not the greatest of ideas to save a negligible amount of fuel, which might even turn risky because cars are provided with power steering as well as power brakes, and the two stop functioning as soon as the ignition is turned off. Also, you will not be able to speed up in case an emergency takes place. Therefore, don’t switch off the engine when sailing plain or coming downhill.

AT Model: Left Foot Braking

If you have switched from MT (manual transmission) model car to an AT (automatic transmission) equipped one, this common error must be encircling you. Left foot in MT car is used to push down the clutch, which is a usual thing, however, when switched to MT model people tend to use the left foot to apply brakes. Here, it is highly recommended to utilize the right foot for braking as well as acceleration, while the left foot should be rested on the dead pedal.

Driving the Wrong Side

This sort of reckless driving is filled with various risks, hazards and is also illegitimate as per road laws in the country. Merely to save few ml(s) of fuel and hardly some minutes, drivers put their as well as of others life under threat and drive against the traffic flow. Stay away from such dangers by always using the U-turns and renounce from putting your and other road users live at risk.

Folded ORVMs

Yes, this is another poor habit of many Indian drivers. Keeping the Outside Rear View Mirrors (ORVMs) folded constantly is not appreciated. However, due to steep price label of some premium ORVMs, especially the electrically powered ones on luxury cars, many drivers refrain from opening them fearing damage. The ORVMs are meant for the safety of yours and others and should be open all the time despite traffic congestion to avoid any risky affair involving you.

Not Paying Heed To Traffic Signals

Young or old, some drivers find fun in jumping the traffic signals. These tricolour lights are put up for your and road users safety. Locating the junction unattended by traffic police and jumping the red light is not a great idea. This act of haste will make you reach your destination a few minutes or seconds earlier but at the risk of collision with the other person or vehicle. Instead of rushing insanely, manage your journey well and start your travel a bit early considering the city traffic conditions.

High Beam

Numerous head-on crashes on the Indian roads are reported due to high beam. Though, it should be avoided every time, unless you are passing through a dark street. However, if there’s two-way traffic on a single way road, then the high beam is strictly a big ‘No’. The high beam blinds the vehicle travelling in the opposite direction, which may cause a collision.

Tailgating

Driving too close to another vehicle is tailgating, and tailgating is very bad. Sticking closely to the front car or motorbike while riding is done as a gesture to ask, or rather dictate, for a way to overtake. This is an unsafe act, which may lead to an uninvited mishap. Hence, it’s always recommended to maintain a safe distance with the vehicle driving in front of you.

Too Much Honking

Excessive honking on a jam-packed traffic road won’t help you get out of it. We as drivers must acknowledge this bad driving practice and try to overcome it. You should understand that your excessive honking can easily irritate the fellow vehicle drivers, passengers and other road users, and you never know someone might not even hesitate in starting a quarrel or fight over it. Besides, avoiding unnecessary honking you should also limit or rather refrain from using the horn at silence zones, for e.g. hospital streets, schools, and residential localities.

Cutting Lanes

One of the major reasons for several road accidents on the highways in India is lack of lane obedience. Remember, the ‘fast lane’ or the lane at extreme right is dedicated for overtaking. Also, driving between two lanes is also a risky practice, which also provides high levels of inconvenience and might lend the following vehicle in two minds as to which lane you are about to proceed. Additionally, not using the side/turn indicators at the time of lane switch may baffle the driver behind you.

Inappropriate Use of Hazard Lamps

To flaunt style or to invite attraction, unnecessary usage of hazard lights among young Indian drivers is quite evident. As drivers, we must understand that as per road safety bible this vital car feature can only be used if the vehicle is stuck, or have broken down, right in the middle of the road preventing the way of other vehicles. Hazard light function is to warn other vehicle drivers about your situation on the road.

Use of Mobile Phones

The most common poor habit of countless Indian drivers and this fatal habit has even infected the bike/scooter users, even they talk over the phone while riding their two-wheelers. It’s a proven fact that the use of mobile phone while driving restricts your focus and you end up crashing into the other vehicle. Who doesn’t receive important or urgent phone calls while driving, however, it is best to attend the same only after you halt your vehicle at a side of the road.

For people looking for space, practicality and three-row versatility for their families, MVPs are a perfect virtuous commuting solution. Although no MVP currently available in the Indian market can match the appeal and passion for SUVs and sedans, still they are nonetheless pretty much in demand from buyers. In this article, we will look at two of India’s leading MUVs: Mahindra Marazzo and Maruti Ertiga, and how they stack up against each other. We will look to help you choose the best option for your family.

Dimensions and Looks

The new Ertiga is wide, tall and long which means more space. But even with the bigger size, it was easily dwarf by Marazzo in terms of dimensions which is wider, taller and longer with a bigger wheelbase too which translates into a good amount of interior space.

While Ertiga has a simple, sober and handsome design. With its fussy bumpers and shouty chrome, Marazzo is far more proportionate. Marazzo is also quite larger than Ertiga with 4585 mm length which is approx. 200mm longer than Ertiga, though in wheelbase it’s only 20mm longer.

Interiors

Ergonomics in Ertiga are far better as one can lift up the beverage cup from cup holder without looking, while in Marazzo, one has to bend forward. Space utilisation is much better in Ertiga compared to Marazzo.

Safety Features

Unfortunately, both the cars fare poorly on safety features and offer a maximum of 2 airbags across the range. However, there’s a plus point with Mahindra Marazzo as it calls emergency services for you in case an airbag goes off.

Engine, Performance and Efficiency

When it comes to engine, performance and fuel efficiency, there are distinguished differences between the two cars. The Mahindra Marazzo offers 120PS, 300Nm torque with a 6-speed gearbox, while the Maruti Ertiga has a 5-speed gearbox with 90PS, 200Nm torque. Talking of mileage, the Marazzo offers a slightly better fuel efficiency than Maruti’s Ertiga.

Comfort and Space for Family

Maruti Ertiga offers 7 seats (2+3+2 combination) while Marazzo comes with an 8 seat configuration (2+3+3)–something perfect for Indian families. Quite surprisingly Ertiga is sufficiently spacious on the inside with a comfortable middle row seat; it also comes with an option to individually slide the 60:40 split seats far back and recline the backrests that give a lot of flexibility.

Talking about space, Mahindra Marazzo clearly wins here. The generous interior and commanding view out from the high set cabin makes this car feel larger than the Maruti Ertiga. In Maruti Ertiga, the third row seating position is fairly enjoyable and one has the option to recline the backrest with theatre like back sitting. On the other hand, in Marazzo, the passengers will have to joggle their feet to find space between the middle seat rails with the knees up seating position.

In boot space too Ertiga is a few notches ahead of Marazzo. For luggage, Ertiga offers enough luggage room to hold two cabin bags. While Marazzo can only hold a few soft bags with all seats up.

This summer the race to become the leader in the SUV segment is going to get hotter. Two heavyweights are locking horn against each other. The Japanese SUV (Toyota Fortuner) is about to get serious competition from Indian Mahindra Alturas G4 which has impressed its buyers on a lot of fronts.

Design

Both the SUVs score on par with each other with slight differences. On one hand, we have the Mahindra Alturas G4 with a much more elegant look while on the other hand, the Toyota Fortuner sports a more butch stance and is sharper than the Alturas. Fortuner’s tough and aggressive look is a result of its bold headlamp design and thick chrome slats flanking its grille. While Mahindra’s Alturas is eye-catching and pleasing to look at with its smooth exterior. Fortuner’s tail lights are sharper in looks and appear higher set while that of Alturas G4, despite being taller, looks simpler from the rear and looks shorter.

Interior

When it comes to the dashboard, both offer premium feel; however, the Fortuner’s is more functional and uses a generous amount of leather. The Mahindra Alturas G4 boasts better interior ambience with it quilted nappa leather finish. Although the Toyota Fortuner has all-black theme giving it a sportier look, but it takes away the sense of spaciousness in this SUV. The Alturas G4 feels more spacious and has electric sunroof as well. Move to the second row and you will feel the extra space that Fortuner offers compared to Alturas. On the infotainment front, the Mahindra Alturas G4 gets an 8-inch high resolution and brighter screen compared to Toyota Fortuner’s 7-inch touchscreen.

Features

It is here that Mahindra Alturas G4 has scored over Fortuner. Alturas G4 has equipped with HID headlamps and LED fog lamps.it also comes with 360-degree parking camera and front parking sensors which the Fortuner does not. One major comfort that Alturas G4 gives is that you can open the boot with the key inside your pocket. On the other hand, Toyota Fortuner requires manually unlocking the boot.

Performance

When it comes to power under the hood, The Toyota Fortuner with its bigger engine scores over Alturas G4. It comes with a 2.8-litre diesel engine that offers 177PS and 450Nm while that of Alturas G4 is a 2.2 litre engine that offers 180PS and 420Nm. The engine in Toyota Fortuner is coupled with a 6-speed automatic gearbox and also have paddle shifters. On the other hand, Mahindra’s Alturas lacks paddle shifter with its Mercedes Benz 7-speed automatic engine.

Off-Road experience

One of the reasons that make Toyota Fortuner immense popular is it’s off road capability though both SUVs come with 4-wheel drive. You can try taking out both these SUVs for any demanding off-road experience.

The Supreme Court of India recently passed a judgment saying that no motor vehicle could be altered now in the manner that could change the original specification made by the manufacturer that was used for the purpose of registration. Shocking? Wondering why this happened? Referring to an amended provision of the Motor Vehicles Act, the apex court said that its clear intent was that a vehicle cannot be altered as the particulars contained in the certificate of registration will vary with those ‘originally specified by the manufacturer’.

As soon as the vehicle is registered with RTO and running smoothly on the road, the owner thinks about modifying the vehicle. It starts from a basic tyre change to complete makeover of the car/motorcycle. Now, the judgment has been passed and left the owners wondering what can be changed and what can’t be? Though there are a lot of debates going on over the extent of the modification so it is vital to learn the facts.

What does the SC judgment say?

“No vehicle can be altered so as to change original specification made by the manufacturer. Such particulars cannot be altered, which have been specified by the manufacturer for the purpose of entry in the certificate of registration”, says Justices Arun Mishra and Vineet Saran. According to the provision of the Act, ‘alteration’ means changing the structure of a vehicle.

Earlier Kerela High Court said that structural alteration was permissible as per the provisions of the Kerala Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989. The state is well-known for many modified vehicles on the road. The Supreme Court judges overturned the Kerala High Court judgment saying…

“In our considered opinion the Division Bench in the impugned judgment of the High Court of Kerala has failed to give effect to the provisions contained in section 52(1) and has emphasized only on the Rules. As such, the decision rendered by the Division Bench cannot be said to be laying down the law correctly. The Rules are subservient to the provisions of the Act and particulars in certificate of registration can also be changed except to the extent of the entries made in the same as per the specifications originally made by the manufacturer. Circular No.7/2006 is also to be read in that spirit. Authorities to act accordingly.”

Wondering what is section 52 on The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988?

To simply explain it, modifications such as wider tyres, bigger alloy wheels and louder horns (which deviate from the manufacturer’s specifications) are not legal. The judgment has a special take on the tyres saying, “amended with the purpose to prohibit alteration of vehicles in any manner, including change of tyres of higher capacity, keeping in view road safety and protection of the environment”.

To help you understand it all better, here’s a list of things that one can modify in their vehicle.

You can change the colour of the vehicle

Minor fitments – door protectors, decals, rain guard can be added.

Tyres can be changed in affordable cars as manufacturers usually offer different specification tyres for the base and top variant.

The engine can be changed, but it requires prior permission from the RTO.

Summing It Up

If the rule is strictly implemented, the question is whether it will be applicable to new vehicles or existing vehicles too? If existing vehicles are included, then what would happen to those that are already modified with wider tyres and other added features?
