Imagine feeling anticipation, fear, freedom, trust, surprise, anger, sorrow and not to mention euphoria… Now imagine having all those feelings swishing past you at the speed of 350 kmph.

In their own words, “Racing at 350kmph is not something you are born to do; it is something you train for, something you fight for…”

This is Moto GP!!!

Let’s rewind a bit, remember that feeling you had when you first peddled faster on your bicycle and won a race amongst your friends? And then the first time you were allowed to ride your dad’s motorcycle all on your own and tested it to the limits on an open straight road? And how about the first time you zipped through traffic on your brand new motorcycle just to not let the other guy win a finish-line-less race?

Bet you remember all of it, and the only reason you remember that and will do it all over again whenever you get the chance boils down to the adrenaline rush, the feeling of winning…

Now fast forward again,

This is what MotoGP is all about but of course, multiply the intensity by 100 times as only the select few ever get the chance to experience being one with the fastest motorcycles and to compete with some of the best riders on the planet. Be it rain or sunshine, they race. Age has no barrier, they race. According to them, “There is just the metal, connecting you rubber, to asphalt”.

A glimpse into building a MotoGP motorcycle…

MotoGP is the greatest of all road motorcycle racing events in the world. These motorcycles are built with meticulous precision based on the technical rules set in order to allow an equal playing field for all riders. These motorcycles are generally not available for purchase to the public and neither are they road legal. Building one of these magnificent machines is a fiercely technical and competitive journey that requires enough patience. On the basic, the heart of the beast comes first and as soon as one is built, it is tested vigorously on the dynamometer. After the testing produces satisfactory results, the engine is then housed in its very own specially engineered chassis for most manufacturers use aluminium while a few others prefer steel. Once that’s done the rest of the parts like suspensions, brakes etc are mounted. Finally the shakedown test… the first time when the motorcycle is tested on a track so that the rider can provide integral feedback on how the bike handles and functions. And then the re-tuning is a repetitive process till the beast perfects its craft.

A trip down memory lane…

It all started when the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) organized the very first Road Racing World Championship Grand Prix in 1949. Initially, races were held for all categories of bikes and well as engine sizes such as 50 cc, 80 cc, 125 cc, 250 cc, 350 cc, 500 cc, and 750 cc solo machines and at some point, 350 cc and 500 cc class motorcycles with sidecars. It was not till the 1960s that all machines adopted 4 stroke engines over the 2 strokes especially in the higher capacity segments.

Over the next decade or four, there were many changes that took place due to which several Asian Motorcycles teams like Yamaha, Suzuki and Honda pulled out and came back after a few years of re-building. While many segments of racing events were dropped, 500cc two-strokes were phased out; Manufacturers were allowed to recruit their choice of engine configuration and much more. But by 2003, the 2 strokes had no game left in the premium leagues despite the higher production costs of 4 stroke bikes. But the 125cc class along with 250cc class didn’t adopt the transition and stuck to 2 stroke engines.

2007 was the year that the MotoGP saw a tragic shift where the maximum engine displacement a machine could have was limited to 800cc for 5 years. And that was just the beginning, the subsequent years saw many more changes to reduce financial losses to an extent where Friday practice and test sessions cut short just to prolong the lifespan of engines, switching to a single tyre manufacturer, and banning qualifying tyres, active suspension, launch control, ceramic composite brakes and carbon brake discs too.

The 2012 season finally saw a breather thanks to the increase in engine capacity that was set at 1000cc again. The newly introduced Claiming Rule Team began making further changes that put riders and manufacturers at more ease. Changes included more engines per season could be used, fuel tank capacity was increased, but all this was subjected to a factory team buying their rivals power train systems for a fixed price.

Over the next few years more changes could be seen such as all teams had to adopt a standard ECU (Engine Control Unit) and certain exceptions could be made by allowing the factory teams to use any software as they saw fit, but the open teams had to stick to the standard ECU prescribed. A few years later the open classes were dropped and all factory racing teams were to stick to the standard ECU. 250cc 2 stroke class was phased out to accommodate the Moto2 where 600cc 4 stroke bikes were used. And the 125cc 2 stroke class too was dropped to make way for the Moto3 where 300cc 4 stroke bikes are ridden.

How does the current day MotoGP event format look like?

Well, there are 4 main categories namely; Moto3, Moto2, MotoGP and MotoE (The newest entrant to the family which employs electric bikes for their races). The Test and practice sessions happen on a Friday, this is the time the riders are allowed to familiarize themselves with the track and racing teams can make small changes according to the track. On Saturday, all 20 racers are given a certain amount of time and tries to set the best lap time possible. This lap time determines the spot they occupy on the D-day starting line. The one to clock the fastest lap time gets the first position and so on. Come Sunday, it’s the day where just those 45 minutes is nothing but a sprint; start to finish with no pit stops for fuel or change of tires.

Earlier, the riders were allowed to change tires only when rain fell during the race and the red flag was shown only to restart or resume the race with wet tires, but lately, the rules have changed to allow a rider switching the entire bike in cases of rain after the white flag is shown. The change of bikes means a different set of tires, steel brakes rotors with different brake pads and softer suspension systems. The world championship consists of 19 races held in 15 different countries and only one of which is held during the night. And each finish position holds points that will finally add up to the highest total and the rider with the highest points is crowned the World Champion for that season.

There have been many lives lost in this dangerous sport but the love for it still remains the same and in fact, it seems to be growing by the millions. You will hear many inspiring stories along with the ones that shatter the heart about many brave souls that come with the will to etch their names in the stones of time but that’s just what this sport does to you. Once you have a taste of it, you cannot escape it; you will not want to escape it.

Gender roles in the 21st are blurring and soon may become obsolete. Gender/sex is no longer a requirement to learn a skill or hobby. A man can cook and a woman can ride a bike. On the grander scheme of things, there still is a lot of work to do. But the change has already begun. Here, we list the top 10 Indian woman bikers crushing the stereotypes and living their passion, that is, bikes.

1. Aishwarya Pissay

Aishwarya Pissay is an off-road racer. At the age of 21, she made her debut at the TVS One-Make Race championship for women. After three years, at the age of 24, Aishwarya won the Baja Aragon FIM series in Spain—an international motorcycle event—and became the first Indian to win such a race. Aishwarya started biking for an MTV show at the age of 18 and rode from Gujarat (Rann of Kutch) to Meghalaya (Cherrapunji) in 24 days. With six championships titles from on-road and off-road events, leading the World Championship in the women category, Aishwarya has turned the tide when it comes to motorcycling.

2. Roshini Misbah

Popularly known as the hijabi biker, Roshini Misbah had a passion for bikes since childhood. When she rode her first bike, Bajaj Avenger Cruiser 220, to her college, she left people agape. Roshni later sold her Bajaj Avenger Cruiser 220 and bought the iconic Royal Enfield 500. She later developed a special love for sports bikes and got herself a Honda CBR. Roshni, too, faced challenges on her way to becoming a biker, especially from her family. But, according to Roshni, her father was her backbone and encouraged her to pursue her passion.

3. Maral Yazarloo

From sketching marketing strategies at a prestige company and designing her own fashion line to embarking on the tracks with Harley-Davidson, Maral Yazarloo kept her love for motorcycling alive amid her different roles. Bestowed with the title of ‘India’s Best Female Superbiker,’ Yazarloo owns a Harley Davidson Night Rod, a Ducati Diavel, a Harley Davidson Fat Boy Special, and a BMW GS. Yazarloo is very particular about the motorcycle gear as she states that every biker should wear sturdy riding boots, safety helmet, gloves, etc. Maral Yazarloo travelled to 67 countries, and she recalls the bike trip from Italy to the Alps as her most memorable journey.

4. Dr. Neharika Yadav

Dr. Neharika Yadav is a dentist by profession and a biker by passion. She owns the title of ‘India’s Fastest Lady Super Biker’ after making it to the 20th fastest time at 2015 KTM open track among 97 male bikers. Dr. Neharika often rides her Ducati Panigale 899 and takes part in motorcycle races. She has set a lap time of 2:23 on her Ducati at Buddh International Circuit (BIC). Dr. Neharika takes pleasure in her passion and job alike and says she loves to strike a balance between them.

5. Esha Gupta

Esha Gupta quit her MNC job to fulfil her passion for biking expeditions. She has clocked over 75,000 km on her Bajaj Avenger motorcycle. In 2014, Esha cruised on the Mumbai–Delhi–Kolkata–Chennai Golden Quadrilateral, covering 7,000 kms on her bike in 40 days. Esha has ventured on solo rides to over 16 states in 2016 to find out if a female rider can drive safely in the country. She concludes that women can ride on Indian roads without fear.

6. Roshni Sharma

Roshni Sharma is an adventure junkie who loves to scale heights and escape from the cubicles of work on weekends to set on off-roading. At the age of 26, Roshni set on a solo bike ride from Kanyakumari to Kashmir and became the first woman biker in India to ride solo from Kanyakumari to Kashmir length, covering 11 states and passing through tough mountain ranges and terrains on the arduous 5,453-km ride. Sharma proved that when a woman is determined to do something, nothing can stop her. This biker surely has nerves of steel

7. Dr. Sarika Mehta

A remark from her male friend about how women shouldn’t ride bikes motivated Dr. Sarika Mehta to learn how to ride a bike. According to her, she did not want to prove her friend wrong, but to make herself right. Dr. Mehta learned biking from her husband, and coming from a conservative family herself, learning biking wasn’t a piece of cake for Sarika. But her determination overpowered everything. She is the first female biker in India to have ridden across 10 countries—India, Myanmar, Laos, Nepal, Bhutan, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. She founded a girls’-only biking group, The Biking Queens, to encourage and aid women who love bikes. Sarika promotes the Government of India’s initiative Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, while bike driving to various States in India to promote education for girls.

8. Anam Hashim

Where women and bikes are considered poles apart, Anam Hashim took women’s biking to another level by becoming a stunt athlete. Anam is the only Indian to have participated in an international stunt competition and won it in 2017. She is also one of the first women to ride to Khardung La, covering over 2,150 km, on a TVS Scooty. Not only in stunts, but Hashim also succeeded in completing one of the toughest racing events, Desert Storm, in one go. Anam says the bike doesn’t know your gender, and encourages women to come forward and plan careers in motorcycling.

9. Urvashi Patole

Urvashi Patole quenched her thirst for motorcycling by co-creating a platform for other women riders, ‘Bikerni,’ which is India’s first all-female team of bikers. Urvashi found bike riding fascinating since teenage. While performing a small stunt, Urvashi met with an accident. But that didn’t stop her. She bought herself a 125cc Bajaj XCD in college. Urvashi is giving a platform for women where they are fulfilling their passion for motorcycling. You can find women young and old riding Royal Enfield and living their dreams.

10. Shirin Shaikh

They say when life throws you curveballs, you learn to serve. Shirin Shaikh did the same. She didn’t pay attention to societal stereotypes. Being a single mom, Shirin is living her passion for motorcycling. Shirin crushes stereotypes by riding on Royal Enfield Thunderbird 350CC. At the age of 14, Shirin rode Yamaha Rx 100 with the help of her uncle. Shirin gives her parents the credit for supporting her and helping her raise her kid, while she manages her career, passion and life. Shirin says her parents taught her not to pay attention to what people say and follow her heart, and she suggests every woman to overcome hurdles and live their dreams.

Euphoria!

That’s what thousands of people who indulge in the great migration came looking for just like I did… But it isn’t what you are thinking, this euphoria is ignited when you feel the combustion under your feet as each one of them fire at maximum RPM, grinning your face off, your heart racing, eyes gleaming… Oh! What a feeling! I’m talking about the scent of burning gasoline through the exhaust mixed with the scent of the coast at a distance and the symphony of live bands with engines revving.

IBW 2019 India was just all about that… Hosted in Little Vagator Goa. The tradition began in 2013, however 2019 was my first time there. Before I tell you the details of the Event, I’d like to share my experience of the migration itself.

And even before that, the prep for this ride as it was approximately 650 Kms one way and the duration was approximately 12hrs long.

Recommended Story – DIRT & METTLE: THE FUSION DEFINED BY ABHISHEK VASUDEV

Fitness:

Although I’m not the rider, sitting in a single position for 12 hrs with breaks of maximum of 15- 20 minutes does take a toll on your body; especially the spine. So I prepped by doing about 45 minutes of yoga everyday religiously 1 month prior to the ride while focusing more on stretching the back, neck, shoulders and hips. This minimises the risks of muscle catches and stiffness during the ride.

While my partner prepped by increasing his routine stretches, and focusing more on strengthening the muscles to build stamina, eliminate the possibilities of shoulders, back and arm aches during the ride and most importantly to keep the mind sharp and agile in case of unexpected situations.

Motorcycle Care:

Stormborn; The Kawasaki Ninja 650 2014 model was our chariot in green and Black for the long haul was treated by the experts at Power Plant in Kormangala, Bangalore where she underwent a full body check- up with an engine oil & oil filter change, top- up on break fluids, coolant, fork oil etc., Once motorcycle doctors gave a heads up, she was fed till she was full, the air pressure in the tyres were checked and last but not the least washed and polished.

Carrying the following is highly recommended for the basic DIY…

Tool Kit with extra clutch, the accelerator cable and jumper cables.

Chain cleaner and Lube.

Route Map:

When the clock struck 3:20 A. M., We began our migration and chose the 2nd route as mentioned in the route map above. To our surprise we weren’t the only ones to cruise the roads at such an early hour.

3 hours later…

1st stop: 0600 hours

Chitradurga

I’m not sure of the name and can’t share any pictures that I clicked as it was pretty dark and the view couldn’t be captured on the phone. Never-the –less, the view is of a hill with a tiny lake in front of it. Even with all the darkness, the hazy glow at the break of dawn was just enough to savour the view with our eyes only. And not missing the opportunity to click Stormborn and her beaming eyes…

Mind you! The roads after Chitradurga are not that great with a lot of diversions to take due to the never ending road construction.

2nd stop: 07:00 hours

It was a small restaurant named Murty’s which had just then opened and at this point we were starving and this was the first decent place to stop for breakfast that was serving immediately. They had the usual south Indian menu with idly, dosa, khara bath etc. Keeping in mind the journey ahead we opted to settle for Idly and stay light so that we don’t start feeling drowsy on the way. And yes! The food was good, didn’t taste much like a hotel but it did taste more like home cooked food. And the tea too was really good. I’m particularly talking about tea as a lot eateries dilute the tea with water, but no! Not here. This stop was for about 45 min. Vroom! Off we go…

We had a few more stops along the way, nowhere prominent… Just as and when we needed some refreshments.

12:00 Hours, 3 stops later…

After hitting the highways for 545 Kms approx., we finally reached State High way 31 where we had a speed date with a lovely bridge and a quite river underneath before the bridge led to twisted narrow roads of the forest reservoirs.

We took a stop here, No talking, No noise of the highway, just the sound of water slowly rippling away. It was a stop to slow down the pace for a few minutes and let the serenity sink in before we cut through the roads again.

The roads through the forests are definitely beautiful with nothing but soothing green all around but due to the recent monsoon, parts of the roads are in pretty bad shape and the effects of which were made quite evident with the rear chain guard falling off and the nuts and bolts had just vanished thanks to the bumpy roads.

13:15 hours

Approximately an hour and a half later we finally made it to Goa. The change in temperature right after crossing the Karnataka border was like stepping out of a force field. The air was humid and hot, we couldn’t wait to get out of all the gear that barely shielded us from the cold earlier that morning. The next thing we searched for was an auto shop to fix up the chain guard in place.

Once that was solved, our last and final stop for the day was our ‘Casa’ for the next 3 days: Sai Coco Resorts, now taken over by flagship Oyo, a.k.a OYO Flagship 19362 Sai Coco Resort. Being right opposite to Morjim Beach, like crossing the road and voila… the beach! It was my first choice although the accommodation was about 14 kms away from Little Vagator where the event was held due to the non -availability of good, budgeted stays in the vicinity. And opting for this place definitely brought no regrets. The staff was really friendly and the attached restaurant served some really yummy food.

After a few hours of rest, we headed towards Morjim beach for the evening and just chill as we were exhausted with the ride and this beach was just a 100 meters walk away.

We sat in the shack rather than the sunbeds out front as the front row was already full…

There are a lot of shacks on the beach and all of them offer the sun bed option with full service and once the sun sets, they even offer candle light dinner option on the beach. So, we gorged on seafood… Prawns, Pomfret Fish, Tiger Prawns, all perfectly prepared in different cuisine style and served with chips and salad. Now I’m from Bangalore and I’m used to food being a little spicy as places like Goa call my taste, these shacks served exquisite dishes and they were definitely lip- smacking while lacking just a pinch of that extra spice that every Indian craves I believe.

To sum it up, the festival of bikes is one event you shouldn’t miss if you are a motorcycle enthusiast and have to be a part of it at least once in a lifetime.

8th DEC 2019

08:00 hours

We departed from our accommodation and began our journey back to Bangalore. Nothing new on the way back, except for the fact that we had to take a lot more breaks compared to the time we began our ride (goa from Bangalore and completed that in 11 hours) which led us to complete our journey in 14 hours on our way back, but the most fun part was that the roads were filled with a lot of bikers all returning back from IBW and a lot of other commuters indulged in conversations and appreciated the tradition.

I would also like to talk about tyremarket.com, who have been very supportive in our endeavours by helping us pick and choose the right tyres for the ride and serviced the bike with regards to tyre changing without any hassles. For this ride our chariot ran on Pirelli Diablo Rosso || with a recent DOT thanks to once again Tyremarket.com.

Until next time…

Laugh. Ride. Live!!!

Imagine an oval track of 400 metres long with only loose stones and mud. Now add a bike weighing approximately 200+ kilograms with no front brakes. Only a few with mettle like no other will have the crazy idea of racing those bikes on a track like that. That is exactly what Flat Track racing is all about.

Flat Track racing began approximately 100 years ago somewhere in the United States and Australia. A century later, one of the purest forms of racing enters India courtesy Harley – Davidson India along with Rajputana Customs in 2018 with the training session held in John Singh Speedway, Jaipur. Where International Flat Track legend Marco Belli, the man who introduced nine-time MotoGP world champion Valentino Rossi to the world of flat track racing headed the training session.

A year later, IBW 2019 saw the Flat Track being opened up commercially where Harley- Davidson saw 500 + entries for a 150 slot registration for which Rajputana Customs customized the Harley- Davidson Street 750 Rod for the event.

Abhishek Vasudev, A four times national champion under the Pro- Stock Class with 6 yrs. experience as a professional motorcycle instructor and 9 yrs. experience as a professional motorcycle road racer on the race tracks sponsored by Tyremarket.com took a shot at taming the dirt tracks.

Every rider was given 4 laps around the dirt track, only top 10 riders with best lap timing were called for round 2. In the second round, Sanjay Kumar took the trophy with Abrar Bin Ayub and Dev Venkatesh secured 2nd and 3rd position.

After the event, we were able to get an insight into flat track racing from Abhishek Vasudev.

In his words, “Being a professional racer for close to a decade in the tarmacked tracks, flat-track racing was something that I’m drawn to as it is the purest form of racing as you don’t have the time to plan your strategies like one would do on the tarmac, here it’s all about how one handles the bike in the spur of the moment as the dirt track is shorter with much less grip and no front brakes.”

“From the riding technique, the bike mods, seating position, holding the handle bars to the braking and cornering is so different and the adrenalin of racing is far more superior as before you finish one corner you have to be ready to dive into the next one with the right amount of momentum because if you are too slow you are sliding off the track and if you are too fast the result is the same. Ultimately Flat track racing is just pure fun and adrenalin. You just ride, you don’t think!”

When asked if he had anything to say to the people aspiring to get into flat tracking he encouraged newer racer to pursue this form of racing as there is no age bar on it and the skills you learn from the experiences help even when you move onto the more lucrative racing segments.

In fact, He too revealed the fact that his professional racing career began after bagging the title in the Bangalore edition of Indian National Rally Championship in 2010.

So, that’s it folks… There you have it…

Flat Tracking is the basics and it is here to stay for centuries to come.

A long weekend is closing in and the idea of waking up to a fresh cup of coffee amidst the green and white while the faint chirping of birds is Morning Raaga to be cherished; felt ever so rejuvenating. Adding a little adrenaline rush to the calm teased even further…

So, the plan of riding to Chikmagalur hatched. Stay there for 2 nights, visit a few places and ride back on the 3rd of November early morning which was a Sunday so that we could touchdown by evening and get plenty of rest before the new week began.

Now, Why Chikmagalur?

Chikmagalur is also known as the Coffee Land of Karnataka with lush green estates and mesmerising landscapes which is definitely a sight for sore eyes.

This city rests on the foothills of the Mullayanagiri peak of the Western Ghats which is also the highest peak of the Western Ghats. The city offers pleasant and favourable hill station climate, tropical rainforest, and coffee estates.

Route Map:

There are 2 main routes to reach Chikmagalur:

Bangalore > Nelmangala > Hassan > Belur > Chikmagalur.

Through NH 75 then SH 57 after Magadi Handpost.

Distance: 244 KMS (approx.)

Bangalore > Nelmangala > Tumkuru > Tiptur > Banavara > Belavadi > Chikamagalur.

Through NH 48, NH 73 from Tumkuru then SH 57 after Magadi Handpost.

Distance: 241 KMS (approx.)

But we chose the 1st option as the travel time was shorter thanks to the good roads and more places to cover.

Essentials to Pack:

I have listed down the important things to keep handy when travelling on bikes and they are as follows:

Documents of the vehicle and IDs.

Tool kit along with a set of jumper cables as you never know when someone’s bike battery wears down. (Learnt that the hard way a while back…)

Extra covers and bungee ropes.

Always have a water bottle handy.

Carry a small first aid kit.

Once we were ready and packed, on the 1st of November 2019 at 5:30 AM a few friends and I started to Chikmagalur with 2 RE Classic 350s and a Kawasaki Ninja 650. The weather was pleasant with a chill in the air, sunny but not harsh and no rains.

Day 1,

07:00 Hrs

Shravanabelagola

Distance: 144 KMS from Bangalore. Time to Spend: 01hr (approx.)

A popular Jain pilgrimage centre in South India. Shravanabelagola is famous for the Bahubali Statue which is supposed to be the tallest monolithic stone statue in the world with a height of 58 feet carved out of a single block of granite. The Gomateswara temple is built on top of Vindhyagiri hill at an altitude of 3347 feet. The climb of 620 steps to the top of the hill rewarded us with a beautiful view of the pond in the centre of the town.

09:00 Hrs

Breakfast Stop: Udayapura

Distance: 51 KMS from Shravanabelagola.
You can choose to have breakfast from Aadya’s Royal Dine or Adyar Ananda Bhavan Sweets & A2B Veg Restaurant. If someone is in the mood for Ice cream Polar Bear is there to please. A little shopping can be done at the Mist COORG SPICE or Malnad silk and fashion plaza. While Athithi Juice Shop can help you hydrate with some fresh fruit juice options. However, we chose to dine at the Aadya’s Royal Dine and found the food served to be much to our liking.

We departed to our next stop around 10:00 Hrs after breakfast, making sure to eat light.

11:00 Hrs

Shettihalli Church

Distance: 50 KMS from Udayapura
Approximately 30 Kms after staying on NH75 we took a left to get on SH21 and after 6kms give or take, we took a right towards Shettihalli and stayed en route for another 12-13kms approx. only to reach the almost submerged (due to the monsoon rains) ruins of a church built in the 1860s by the French Missionaries with a gothic style of architecture. We spent about 20-30 minutes here and clicked a few pictures. And started towards Chikmagalur with no further stops along the way

However, we did stop for 5-10 min about 17 odd kms after Hassan. The lake is named Kalkere.

13:10 Hrs

Chikmagalur

Distance: 78 KMS from Settihalli

We booked our stay in The Planters Court, K. M Road, Chikmagalur and the rooms were ultra-horrible with water seepage causing fungus on the walls and furnishing however we didn’t notice this as we just kept our luggage and headed to the new pub in the town: Fai Dang, right next to our stay as we were starving. And we truly enjoyed the food there having ordered Roasted Pork, Crispy Pork, Chicken Manchurian, Chicken Lollipop, Potato Chilli, Peanut Masala, Masala Padad Veg Fried Rice and Chicken Fried Rice. (P.S. If you are a Pork lover, you shouldn’t miss the Roasted Pork.) The ambience too was soothing with soft rock classic playing in the background.

After lunch, we retired to our rooms and figured out the disgusting state of the rooms but being exhausted and full we took some rest and spent the rest of the evening trying to figure out another accommodation for the next night as all the rooms were sold out due to the long weekend.

Day 02,

10:00 Hrs

We headed to a small mess kind of place named Kannika Food Court right opposite to our stay to have breakfast and we ordered Lemon rice, Mangalore Buns, Idly and Vada. The food was tasty and light unlike the usual hotel food with soda. After breakfast, we packed up our luggage and headed to the new accommodation close to Mullayanagiri peak.

11:00 Hrs

Distance: 20 KMS from Chikmagalur, K. M Road (Approx.) Towards Baba Budangiri.

Although the distance was just 20 kms uphill, we anticipated the ride to last about an hour-long due to the narrow winding roads. However, to our surprise, the journey took us 3 long hrs out of which 2 hrs just to cover 4 kms of the road due to the high traffic and senseless parking on either side for homestays.

14:30 Hrs

Eco Holiday Homestay

This place was open private land with several metal tents setup with washrooms outside. But the upside was the fact that this stay was amidst nature with a small stream running along and the tents and washrooms were way cleaner. Taking it as a new experience we set our luggage down, had lunch and left to explore Baba Budangiri.

16:00 Hrs

Somewhere on the way to Manikyadhare Waterfalls

The ride uphill was calming with very beautiful landscapes.

A small detour to reach a not so famous yet charming sunset viewpoint was made.

17:20 Hrs

Manikyadhare Waterfalls

Although this waterfall is really beautiful, people bathing (full-fledged with soap and shampoo etc) under the falls makes the view pretty disappointing. Reaching the waterfalls required us to climb downhill through a series of stairs consisting approximately 150 steps and entry tickets have to be bought. You will find many monkeys too.

We returned to our stay around 18:00 hrs in the evening and a campfire was set up along with our dinner. The homestay chef had prepared Chicken Kebab, White Rice with Chicken Curry and Tomato Curry which was a bit spicy but really delicious. Tuning off for the night by 10 O’clock after dinner, the temperature had dropped down drastically and the midnight showers that lasted till 6 in the morning added to the cold.

Day 03,

07:00 Hrs

We said goodbye to Eco Holiday Homestay and departed with all our luggage towards Mullayanagiri. We stopped at an eatery on the way, had a light breakfast and resumed our ride. The routes were edgy and parts of the Ghats were so foggy that the clear visibility was reduced to a maximum of 7 feet.

08:00 Hrs

Mullayanagiri peak Base

Distance: 18 KMS Approx. from Eco holiday Homestay.

At the base of the peak, you have parking space on the left, we parked our bikes there and left our luggage with a vendor. From the base to the peak we climbed about 550 steps give or take 100 steps. As we reached the peak which is at the height of 6330 ft., we could see nothing but white on either side. I can honestly say it felt almost heavenly. There is a temple at the top and a cave somewhere along the way to the top that we, unfortunately, didn’t know about, hence ended up not going.

11:00 Hrs

We started our ride back to Bangalore and had a few pit stops along the way near the tolls as the heat was taking a toll on us. Our Lunch stop was around 16:00 Hrs in Kunigal Empire restaurant and resumed to ride back to Bangalore to finally touchdown by 19:00 Hrs in our homes.

All in all, it was a great experience with lots of memories even though we weren’t able to cover a few more places. Hopefully we will on our next ride to Chikmagalur.

Until next time, Laugh. Ride. Live!

Yamaha RD 350!

Hearing that name, brings a lot of emotions to the surface. Happiness! Nostalgia! Excitement! And much more. It also instils a sense of belonging, a sense of freedom, All in all it makes one feel legendary.

It was India’s first sports bike and blew the Indian masses away with the raw power it produced.

But with great power came greater risks as the masses were not used to so much torque. These bikes were built to be fast and fast like nothing before. Throwing a whooping a 30.5 bhp @6750 rpm and a peak torque of 3.3 kg-m @ 6500 rpm, 0-100 under 7 seconds was the very definition of adrenaline rush for the very few who dared to experience it.

Although these bikes were thrilling, the thrill was something that the masses did not seek and looked at 2 wheelers just as a means of commute, while the RD 350 was anything but just a vehicle for the commute. The mileage was just between 20-25 Km/L and people were in accidents more frequently because they weren’t experienced enough to handle the power. So, naturally the bikes didn’t gain traction and the production only lasted for 2 years (1983-1985).

The hunger for these mean smoke- puffing, petrol drinking, oil leaking, 2- stroke machines of rapid death as they were known colloquially but originally known as Race Developed series only gradually grew onto the younger generations. These bikes were symbols of the rebels, the free-spirited, the grasshopper in the story of the ants and grasshopper as these bikes were built purely for the passion of biking and mocked the lifestyle of saving for the future, maintaining economy to gain fuel efficiency, staying safe and not risking as the society demanded for one to settle down and provide for the family.

Over a period of time people began to appreciate these machines rather than despise them and some even worked on modifying and tuning them to push the barriers and even succeeded. Today you can find some RD 350s with BHP almost equivalent to the KTM Duke 390 which is 43.5 HP. And some bikes which were built for drag races are capable of throwing close to 70 BHP and clocking a quarter-mile in 11.4 seconds or even less.

To the old and to the young, these bikes are a heartthrob even till this day and have a really good market in the second-hand markets especially when kept in mint condition as it came with a 6- speed gearbox, twin cylinders, twin carburettors, air-cooled torque induction and absolutely no electronic gizmo which made them so easy to deal with.

And that’s what it takes to take the irrefutable title of an “Evergreen sports bike: The Yamaha RD 350”
