How to Store Tyres – Tyre Care

How and where to store tyres

You want to change your wheels, but what to do with the tyres you take off from your car? This is a question that many of us are wondering for an answer. There are many factors at play that can influences a tyre’s aging process, but you can prolong the life by properly storing them. So you got to think again the way you have been storing tyres till now. In this part of Tyre Care Series we will look at “How to Store Tyres” properly.

● Get a soap, water and brush and clean the tyre of any dirt as well as brake dust as they will cause tyre damage. If you keep your tyres on wheels, make sure to clean those too. After cleaning make sure to dry them well.

● Now put them in big bags without any air, you got to squeeze all the air from the bags. This will help prevent the lubricating oil within the tyre compounds from evaporating. You can even use a vacuum cleaner to draw out air before sealing the bags.

● Always put the tyres in a cool and dry place. You got to check that the tyres are placed away from the electrical equipment. Because the ozone from those can damage the rubber.

● Avoid rain and moisture as it can cause the rubber to deteriorate and the steel cord inside the tyre to rust.

● Avoid direct sunlight as ultraviolet rays can damage your tyres. The storage place must be well covered. As the tyres are black in colour they always soak up the heat and this can break the rubber earlier than expected.

● Try to store tyres vertically rather than stacking horizontally, this will reduce the stress and tyre distortion. Avoid putting tyres directly on the ground always keep them on something like a wood table or log.

● If the tyres are mounted on the rims, you should store them stacked and not upright as with tyres without rims.

● If you don’t store your tyres in individual bags and instead stack them, then make sure to stack them “white to white” and ”black to black” to prevent staining of the white rubber as white and black rubber are compounded differently.

● Last but not least, don’t let vehicle stand idle on tyres for long periods of time. Inactivity for a long period is harmful to tyres. Driving helps in maintaining oil dispersion within the rubber compounds. If your vehicle is not driven for a very long time, cover the tyres to protect them from direct sunlight.

Just like us, tyres too keep on ageing. But these few tips will slow that process and extend the life of your tyres while in they are in storage. Remember, that before mounting your stored tyres back on the vehicle make sure to have a professional inspection of those rubbers.
