For most of us tyres are just black round rubber pieces, but very few know about the hard work, technology, research, designing, etc. put in the making tyres.
With the time, the tyre industry is increasingly becoming competitive and open to new technological innovations. And Pirelli has always been at the forefront of this new trend. At this year’s Geneva Motor Show, Pirelli is unveiling two innovations, the coloured edition tyres and Pirelli Connesso – an integrated system that ‘talks’ to its driver. These two options can now be specified with the P Zero and Winter Sottozero, Pirelli’s top range summer and winter tyres, lets drivers to mix and match between colours and sensors as per their wish.
Now tyres to become colourful
The coloured edition from Pirelli is all set to alter the stereotype associated with tyres that all tyres are black. Pirelli after a lot of hard work and extensive research has developed a proprietary technology that will give a new life to world’s most prestigious cars. This will be in addition to Pirelli’s existing specialities, such as Run Flat, Seal Inside: a technology that lets a tyre to repair itself in the event of a puncture and PNCS (Pirelli’s noise-reduction system).
Red, white, yellow and silver are the colours on show in Geneva, these will be seen at Pirelli’s stand as well as on some prestigious and stunning cars of the show on various stands. Other colours can be ordered on request. To keep the tyres in same vivid colours Pirelli has developed an innovative labelling system and refining a protection system. Fundamentally, Pirelli’s engineers have come up with a novel type of protective barrier to guard the colours as well as reduce the risk of decolouring.
Pirelli Connesso – A system for intelligent tyresÂ
With Pirelli Connesso, the tyre technology has reached to the never before heights. Now the tyres are interactive and intelligent. Connesso is actually an integrated platform which uses a sensor that is embedded within the Winter Sottozero and P Zero ranges.
It will expand the already available information on car’s on-board computer. This sensor sends information about the maintenance and wear of all the tyres. This sensor sends data to a control unit and Pirelli cloud, then in a case of emergency, it sends alert messages to the driver’s app. With these alerts sent via smartphones, Pirelli can warn the driver about the low tyre pressure in one or more tyres; or when the wear limit is about to be crossed. It weighs only a few grams and has no adverse impact on the overall performance of the tyres.
In the initial version, Pirelli Connesso will send the wear information, measure its temperature and pressure, how many kilometres has been run, and information about the vertical static load. Moreover, Pirelli Connesso can also work as a tyre pressure monitor when the tyres are inflated. The future of Connesso will see Pirelli introducing a remote function that will make it possible for the drivers to control their tyres even from a distance.
The coloured edition tyres are available on a pre-order basis for prestigious cars in 19-inch and larger size. While the Pirelli Connesso will be available by this summer in a phased manner starting from the U.S.A and later to Europe and Asia-Pacific.
