As the usual air you have been filling at the air filling stations contains about 80 percent of nitrogen. Also, know as rust, corrosion etc., oxidation is the perfect enemy of the rubber and steel i.e. your tyres and wheels. As nitrogen is an inert and an oxygen-free gas, the chances of oxidation occurring are out of question. So here it boils down to; no oxygen, meaning: bye-bye to oxidation, tyre decay or water formation or water related issues.

At one point, where the standard air is not good for tyres, compressed air is even worse. As the compressed air runs through a compressor, which generally adds trace amounts of oil and particulate together with water vapour. All these, join forces to further dampen the situation and cause more rust, decay, corrosion and affect the tyre and wheel assemblies.

The most disadvantageous property of oxygen is its tiny molecular form. A molecule of oxygen is nearly 1/4 of the size of a molecule of nitrogen. Oxygen molecules are so tiny that it is likely for air filled tyres to lose 1-3 PSI every month due to “permeation.” Permeation is a typical process where the oxygen molecules in compressed air escape through tyre/rubber. This is the reason why your car/vehicle’s air filled tyres lose 1-3 PSI of air pressure each month.
