One of the world’s largest tyre manufacturers, Michelin has always been on the innovation spree, and its latest advancement comes in the form of ‘connected tyres’. The newly developed tyres will first make their entry in the 2018 French Rally Championship. Presented by Michelin Motorsport, the racing sport’s first ‘connected tyres’ will communicate with the drivers as well as with the co-drivers via a smartphone app (iOS and Android). The downloadable application is designed to assist competitors, enhance their performance by improving the efficiency of tyres.
Earlier in 2017, the French tyre major launched Michelin Motorsport’s My Rally Engineer application and this latest app is a step forward in the same line. “Our initial My Rally Engineer app, which was introduced in 2017, is a digital tool designed to allow amateur crews to track and optimise the performance of their tyres,” Michelin Motorsport’s Innovations Programme In-Charge Mr Serge Grisin stated. “Today, we have gone a significant step further since Michelin Motorsport Connect enables competitors to collect data in real time and benefit from two-way dialogue with their tyres by means of a practical and intuitive new application,” he further added.
Michelin Motorsport’s new innovation is targeted towards those rally drivers and co-drivers who do not benefit from the presence of a Michelin technical advisor on events. According to Michelin, connected technology is the need of the hour in today’s tyre industry and the company is continuously exploring ways of making these innovations a real asset for its customers. Factors like right choice of tyres, careful adjustment of tyre pressures and efficient driving style adoption boosts performance alongside contributes to a safer motorsport. With the implementation of harsh norms for rallying tyres, it is important to exploit their full potential.
It’s not an easy task to check tyre pressure before and after every special stage, especially, at the time when the vehicle is parked on a narrow road. Additionally, things become more stressful when the countdown is on for the start of the next stage. Here, Michelin Motorsport Connect comes to the rescue, wherein drivers and co-drivers can regularly monitor tyre pressures and simultaneously benefit from tyre-related information and log data during rallies. The procurement of this data helps analyse the adjustments needed for the coming stage. With Michelin Motorsport Connect, all the rally competitors have access to the in-car data.
Michelin Motorsport Connect app combines re-usable sensors that are located inside each Michelin rally tyres, an in-car receiver and a smartphone application (iOS or Android). Available at process starting of 400 Euros via Michelin Motorsport distributors, the innovative app will be released in France in the coming months prior to its launch in Europe and other parts of the world.
