At the 2017 Le Bourget Air Show in Paris, Michelin, the world’s leading tyre manufacturer and Safran Landing Systems, a leading player in the global aerospace and defence industry showcased the world’s first connected tyre for the aeronautical industry. Named ‘PresSense’, this innovation consists of an electronic pressure sensor installed within the tyre to improve and simplify ground maintenance operations. This technology was the outcome of the collaboration between the Michelin and Safran Landing Systems.

The PresSense is a wireless solution that functions as an embedded system. The system works on the technology in which the electronic pressure sensor in the tyre collects information about the inflation. This information is then digitally and remotely transferred to a smartphone and then to the maintenance database. This is much simpler than the conventional maintenance which requires manual pressure collection.

Frank Moreau, Director of Michelin Aircraft Tire, commented that the collaboration between Michelin and Safran Landing Systems has been decisive and that the PresSense represents a real technological innovation which will answer Michelin’s clients’ needs. Vincent Mascré, CEO of Safran Landing Systems expressed his happiness on the partnership with Michelin over this tyre innovation technology. He was of the view that both the companies with their respective expertise in different fields will cater to the growing needs of their clients globally. The deployment of the PresSense project will take place sometime in 2019.
