Maruti Suzuki India Limited, the Indo-Japanese conglomerate is the largest and one of the most popular auto manufacturers in the country. It is the subsidiary of Suzuki Motor Corporation of Japan. The company introduced the mid-sized sedan Esteem in the year 1994. Soon after its launch, Maruti Esteem went on to become an instant hit acquiring accolades from all corners. Moreover, in 1996, three more variants were included in the list. The major facelift came in 1997 when it got new headlight with amber indicator lamps, extensive wrap-around rectangular rear lamp, new dashboard and two-spoke steering wheel with unchanged mechanicals. In 2004, Maruti Esteem got another facelift which included redesigned headlamps incorporating orange indicator bulbs, new compact chrome bordered radiator grille and redesigned tail lamps. The vehicle received many updates throughout its lifetime and at last, Maruti Suzuki Esteem was discontinued in February 2008 in India.

Maruti Esteem was a successor to Maruti 1000 sedan. Though it looked quite similar to its predecessor, there was little trimming on the front grille and extra cluster of lights at the rear was also different. Esteem measured 4095 mm in length, 1575 mm in width, 1395 mm in height with the wheelbase of 2365 mm and ground clearance of 170 mm. The fuel tank capacity of esteem was 40 litres, boot space capacity was 376 litres, while the kerb weight stood at 875 kg.

The car was quite a luxurious one of its time. The feature list that was an interesting part of the sedan were central locking system, defogger, Kenwood music system and power antenna. Inside it featured aspects like the vanity mirror, cigarette lighter and silver finishing on power window switch were considered amenities. Other creature comforts comprised of an air conditioner, remote fuel lid opener, cabin heater and ORVMs on both sides.

For better safety Esteem was adorned with child-proof rear door locks, halogen headlamps, headlamp levelling device, collapsible steering column and prismatic day and night rear view mirror.

Maruti Esteem was packed with 4-stroke petrol mill with 1298cc of displacement. The engine gave out a power output of 84 bhp at 6000 rpm and maximum torque of 110 Nm at 4500 rpm. The motor comes mated to 5-speed manual transmission with the top speed of 160+ kmph. For diesel variants, Maruti Esteem featured 1527cc engine that generates the output of 57 PS at 5000 rpm and peak torque of 96 Nm at 2500 rpm, which was paired to 5-speed manual gearbox.

Maruti Esteem was available in the price bracket of Rs. 4.63- Rs 6.15 lakh. With this price, the car offered its services from middle-class people to elite ones. The mid-end trim LXi was tagged at Rs. 5.14 lakh. The car was also offered with automatic trim which was tagged at Rs. 6.11 lakh. All prices ex-showroom, Delhi.
