How to Jump Start a Car

What would you do if your car’s battery is not working? Probably, try to jump start it. But, before you try to jump start a battery make sure to check the battery first and follow these steps:

Detecting the issue:

● Make sure that the battery is creating a problem.

● Check the headlights first. Are they dim or bright? If they are dim, then it’s likely that it is the battery problem. But, if the vehicle’s headlights are bright then you do not have a dead battery and a jump start won’t help.

● Put the key in the ignition and see whether the dashboard lights are up as usual or not. Test the stereo. In most cases, even with a low battery one can see some dashboard lights and can hear some sound of the stereo. If you do not get a flicker out of your dashboard, then you may have a problem in the ignition switch.

● Try to start the car and observe its behaviour. Does it turn over very slowly or does it make a crank sound? If it makes cranky sound quickly then that means you do not have a dead battery and a jump start is not really what’s needed. But, if it cranks slowly, or not at all, you probably have a dead battery.

How to Jump a Battery?

1)

jump start a car

For a jump start, you need two cars, so open each car‘s hood and locate the battery. In most cars, it is located near the front of the car on the right or left side, but in some cars, the battery is located in the trunk. If you can’t locate the battery or unsure about it, read the owner’s manual (your best friend and guide). After locating, identify the positive and negative terminals. The positive terminal will be marked with (+) sign and usually have a red cable attached to it. The negative terminal will be marked with (-) sign and usually have a black cable attached to it.

2) Now park both the cars in a way that they are facing each other and the distance between both the car batteries is as less as possible. Turn off the engine, radio, lights, A/C and all other electrical equipment of both the cars.

3) Make sure that the cars are not touching each other at all. Because if the cars are touching then jumping battery can cause a dangerous electrical arc between the vehicles.

4) Don’t forget to put on the safety gears like Goggles and Gloves.

5)

Now look for the battery leakages, cracks or any other damages. If you find these things, do not jump start a car. You have to replace the battery in the first place.

6) It is necessary to remove the disabled automobile’s battery cables from the battery terminals and then clean both the cables and terminals. Use a brush to clean all the corrosion.

7)

jumper cables - positive and negative

Just like battery wires, the jumper cables too probably have red and black cables. Make sure that once the jumper cables are connected to the batteries they never touch each other. Because permitting them to touch each other can damage both the cars.

Now connect the jumper cables. Connect the one red clamp to the positive terminal of the dead battery and the other red clamp to the positive terminal of the good battery. Connect one black clamp to the negative terminal of the good battery and connect the other black clamp to a piece of grounded metal on the dead car. Make sure that none of the cables is hanging into the engine compartment, where they could touch the other parts thereby risking the safety.

9) Now start the working car. Let it be idle for some time. Do not race the engine. By doing this you can charge the dead battery.

10) After doing this, now try to start the disabled vehicle. If it does not start, shut-off the engine and disconnect the last connection temporarily while you slightly twist each of the four clamps to ensure a good electrical connection. Now restart the working car again. Allow another five minutes for charging before attempting to start the disabled vehicle. If somehow this method also doesn’t work after a few more tries, then you need to have your car towed to the nearest car service centre.

11) Once the car starts, remove the jumper cables. While removing the jumper cables, remove them in the reverse order in which they were attached to and don’t let any of the cables touch each other. To disconnect, first disconnect the black clamp from the grounded metal on the dead car. Then disconnect the black clamp from the negative terminal of the good battery. Now disconnect the red clamp from the positive terminal of the good battery. Finally, disconnect the red clamp from the positive terminal of the dead battery.

12) Keep the recently disabled car’s engine running. Run the car idle for 5 minutes before turning it off. This should give the battery enough charge to start the car again.
