The world’s leading tyre manufacturer has announced non-pneumatic TurfCommand tyre that will be used in commercial mowing. These new tyres are based on DuraWeb technology that Goodyear Tyre has been developing quietly for the last few years. This tyre technology comprises a thermoplastic connecting structure with a peculiar combination of flexibility and stiffness which allows it to support heavy loads and at the same time, it can minimize turf wear while providing a smooth ride. The tyre is designed in such a way so as to absorb impact, to deform and to provide a smooth ride. From the start of 1970s Goodyear Tyre has focused on the development of non-pneumatic technologies where it had collaborated with NASA’s Apollo Lunar Rover Vehicle for the design of tyres. Recently, it also joined hands for the tyre development for future missions to Mars.
Goodyear’s Chief Technology Officer, Christopher Helsel said that the commercial release of the TurfCommand tyre marked an important step in the company’s effort to develop airless tyre technology for a multitude of applications. Further, adding to it, he said that as they look into the future the demand for lower maintenance, long lasting tyres will continue to expand as autonomous vehicles are set to become mainstream in the future.
