What Are The Most Common Car Suspension Problems

Car’s suspensions are a complex system of rods, shock absorbers, pistons, etc. They are a significant part of every car and prevent it from any damage from bumpy and uneven roads by absorbing all the shocks and keeping the balance of the vehicle. Provided the conditions they go through, the suspension systems may be susceptible to damage or even wearing out after years of use.

A number of car drivers failed to reckon any abnormality in the suspension system. Therefore, to protect the car from further damage, one must look for the following symptoms and get it checked by a qualified mechanic.

1. Vehicle pulling to one side while driving/Alignment Problem –

While driving, the wheels have to point in the proper direction because if they aren’t your vehicle’s steering won’t be in the centre, which means that you will lose the right direction, this, in turn, will increase your tyre wear. This alignment issue can be easily spotted while driving if the car’s wheel is pulling to one side. This could happen due to reasons such as low tyre pressure, uneven tyre wear, bad tie rods or steering rack.

2. Feeling excessive bumps –

A rough ride is a clear indicator that your vehicle’s shockers could be worn out and need a check-up, you might require to replace them too.

The shock absorbers are designed to keep tyres on the road and when they fail the car bounce all over. This is due to the fluid which is used to dampen the bouncing, but if the fluid is leaked, the shockers’ performance declines. To make sure that it isn’t the shock absorbers that are creating the nuisance, get it checked. A worn out leaf spring too could be the reason for the excessive bounce.

3. One side of the vehicle is sitting low –

To easily notice if your vehicle has damaged spring take the car on a levelled ground, and see if it is tilted to any one side more than the others. You might even hear noises when the car hit bumps and it will give difficulty in manoeuvring because of damaged spring. The worn out spring and the shock are the main contributor to this problem. A problematic shock may put extra weight on the spring leading to lower sitting height/inclination to one side.

4. Difficulty in steering –

While driving at slow speed if there’s difficulty in steering, then there is something wrong with the suspension system. You may notice that while you turn the steering wheel it will feel like it is slipping. But this could also be due to other problems, bad shockers being the one.

5. Ball joints problem –

If the ball joints that attach the suspension to the wheels are making squeaking and creaking sound while driving, especially while taking turns then it is time to replace them. Take your car to a service centre and get it checked because waiting for the ball joint to break down can damage the suspension system severely.

6. Brake issue –

The brakes are meant to stop the vehicle by slowing its overall momentum. If they are not working properly, which may be due to brake pads issue, it can lead to the shaking and vibration of the steering column thereby causing troubles in driving and damaging the suspension system. There’s also a possibility that the car might shake because of the loose steering itself, then, in this case, you are required to get it fixed as soon as possible.

In the end, it can be said that the sooner you would get to know about the above-mentioned issue the better it would be for the car as well as your personal safety. Neglecting these signs would not only cost you a lot of money on repair or replacement of various parts but will also compromise your and passengers safety too.

Happy Driving!

  • I’ve noticed that my car is very bumpy over regular roads lately and I’m concerned that there could be something wrong. It seems like the car just goes up and down over and over after I hit some sort of bump. From what you have here, it seems like the shocks could be bad, so, having a professional take a look at them to have them replaced or repaired would be good.

  • I’m glad you mentioned that a rough ride might mean that the shockers need a check-up. I’ve noticed that it feels bumpy when I drive my Subaru even on the motorway. Maybe I should take it to an auto repair service to see if they can repair or replace the shockers and put an end to the bumpiness.

  • If there is any problem with the vehicle’s suspension system, then the person will definitely feel it while driving. The most unpleasant truth is, many car owners take their suspension system for granted. But with gradual use, the performance of the suspension system gets deteriorated and needs necessary repairs for the restoration of its serviceability. As it is quite expensive to replace, thus, we should not overlook it completely. A rough ride, drifting during the turn, uneven trade wear of tires, oily shocks, are some of the warning signs of a faulty suspension system. A car owner should never ignore these signs, rather he should do necessary repairs with the help of a car specialist to make sure his vehicle is safe and running smoothly.

  • Thanks for posting this informative blog. My car is get pulling one side wheel driving and it is a wheel alignment problem. When you are driving , the wheel should be pinned to proper direction, if they are not in proper direction then the steering could not be in center. It may cause , you lose your right direction. It may leads to tire wear problem.
