Dangerous Things Drivers Do On Roads

Causes Of Road Accidents

Road Accidents In India

Every day more than 400 people lost their lives on Indian roads, says a report in 2016. These are some serious numbers. The National Crime Records Bureau says that many of these deaths are the result of “drink and drive”. Specialists say that by following basic measures this number can be reduced to a large extent. They are of the view that it’s not the government which is solely responsible for road safety, but the public too has its role to play. So here we will see the major mistakes that drivers do on our roads and how to prevent them.

Not Wearing Seat belts

Airbags certainly make cars safer, but they are designed to work in conjunction with seatbelts, which help prevent passenger ejection during high-speed crashes and rollovers. But, unfortunately, it’s a common issue across the country where people hardly take seat belts seriously. So next time you are driving or sitting on passenger seats don’t forget to make your safe.

Reckless Driving

A common phenomenon among our youth. It is a very potential cause of a crash. If you are not following the speed limits then you’re more likely to cause an accident. Not surprisingly, a number of accidents take place when both the drivers coming from the opposite directions are involved in reckless driving. As a safety measure follow speed limits and pay attention to the sign boards to avoid accidents.

Driving Behind Heavy Trailers

You may not take it too seriously until a mishap occurs to you. But driving closely to heavy vehicles carrying loads can become a nightmare for you. There are chances of head-on collision with the vehicle coming from opposite side in case you try to overtake the heavy vehicle suddenly. Also, in case the heavy vehicle apply emergency brakes, there are all chances that your car is going to bump into it. So next time you see a heavy truck let it pass or wait for some time to overtake it when the road is broad enough to do it.

Driving too fast in bad weather conditions

When the weather is not so good, slowing down is the best option to avoid an accident, even for highly-trained drivers. Unfortunately, we take it very lightly. When the road is slippery, a heavy vehicle like SUV will probably lose traction if you need to slow down in a serious hurry. There are also very good chances of head-on collision due to bad weather. So there’s a good reason to slow down and leave a little space between your car and the one in the front as well as back.

Distracted Driving

As has been highly perceived, not only texting and driving is the only dangerous distracted driving behaviour, but also making phone calls, fiddling with the GPS or music systems and even talking to co-passengers are all glaring examples that can take a driver’s attention off the road and lead to serious accident. In many cases, simply being lost in thought can be enough of a distraction to cause a serious accident. So the best way is to keep yourself attentive while driving until you reach your destination.

Drunk Driving

Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs may seem like an obvious danger, yet hundreds of thousands of person are still involved in drunk-driving crashes every year. Drinking not only impairs a driver’s ability to drive but to react to things occurring around them and respond appropriately to potentially dangerous situations. That’s why it’s a good idea to avoid driving after drinking even in moderate amounts, or else you can even go for a cab service like Uber, Ola, Meru, etc.

Driving while feeling drowsy

Driving while tired may feel like a necessary evil after a long day of work or a restless night, but doing so can endanger not only your life but that of your co-passenger(s) also or even to the pedestrian walking around. When the driver’s body has been deprived of sleep for a long time, his/her reaction to act at an appropriate time is slowed which could lead to an accident. To avoid accidents, you can either pull over your car to a safe place to rest, in case you are driving for a long journey.

Driving with bad mood

People driving a vehicle while being upset is a common phenomenon. Road rage may include obscene gestures, yelling insults or purposely driving in an unsafe manner. Driving in this state is dangerous and causes a distraction which in turn affects a driver’s ability to concentrate. If you do become upset with another driver, you may tend to start driving aggressively. So our advice is to remain calm in every condition as a precaution is always better than cure.
