To make the driving even better in terms of road safety, the world’s leading tyre manufacturer Continental is in the process of introducing two new tyre technologies which include electrical conducive rubber. These new technologies will continuously monitor the tyre’s condition and will adapt the tyre performance as per the road conditions. In the ongoing 2017 International Motor Show in Frankfurt, Germany, the two technologies called as ContiSense and ContiAdapt will make their debut.
ContiSense is based on the technology that will enable electric signal, developed from the electrically conductive rubber compounds to be sent to the receiver of the car through a tyre sensor. These sensors will monitor the tread depth and temperature continuously and will sound a warning if something is about to go wrong. In the coming future, it will feature some more sensors that can actually ‘feel’ the temperature and snow and can pass this information on to the drivers. This data further will be transmitted to their smartphones.
ContiAdapt technology comes with four different combinations that can modify the size of the contact patch according to the conditions of the road, which will allow the perfect adaptation to the wet, slippery, uneven, and normal conditions. This technology combines microprocessors that are integrated into the wheels to adjust the tyre pressure with variable width rim. For instance, driving on dry roads will combine both smaller contact patches with high tyre pressure which will make for low rolling resistance and energy-efficient driving on smooth, dry roads.
As per Continental Tyre, these tyre technologies promise solutions for the future as these tyres are adaptive in order to meet the needs of automated driving and electric mobility. However, when will these tyres be produced is not clear as the company has given no timeline regarding the production of these tyres. One thing that is clear is that it is going to be an expensive technology to afford.
