It won’t be wrong if we say hatchbacks are the lifeline of Indian automotive industry. More than 50 percent sales come from these two-box cars. Since most of the two-wheeler buyers upgrade to a hatch, it becomes important for carmakers to come up with a value for money product. Undoubtedly, the most critical aspect of a car purchase is the fuel efficiency. The better the fuel economy, the more are the chances of it to be successful. So, let’s clear the air on the six most fuel-efficient hatchbacks in the country. Here you go:
6. Ford Figo
Price: Rs 4.73 – 7.70 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi)
Mileage: Petrol – 18.16 kmpl |Diesel – 25.83 kmpl
Inspired by its distant cousin, Aston Martin, the Ford Figo features a smart yet simple looking design language. The cabin is spacious and is up with latest technological marvels including the Ford MyKey, which remembers driver’s setting. Powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine and a 1.5-litre diesel engine, it returns the maximum power of 86.8 bhp / 112 Nm and max output of 99 bhp / 215 Nm, respectively. The petrol Figo returns a mileage of 18.16 kmpl while its diesel trims surprises with 25.83 kmpl. Mated to a five-speed manual transmission, the petrol motor also gets a six-speed automatic gearbox. The only hatch under Rs 10 lakh to feature six-airbags, the Figo also offers dual airbags right from the base variant.

The contemporarily designed Maruti Suzuki Ignis is a smart city hatch ideal for daily city commutes. With its excellent fuel economy of 20.89 kmpl and 26.8 kmpl with petrol and diesel engines respectively, its compact dimensions make city runabouts a cake walk. Under the small hood of the Ignis rests a 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine or a 1.2-litre VVT petrol motor. While the former motor produces 82 bhp and 113 Nm, the latter one pumps out 74 bhp and 190 Nm. The Honda Jazz is a spacious hatch, which comes with Honda’s reliability and dependability of its i-series’ engine. Powered by a 1.2-litre petrol motor, the Jazz returns a mileage of 18.7 kmpl along with the maximum power of 88.7 bhp and a peak torque of 110 Nm. Contrarily, its 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel mill churns top power of 98.6 bhp and 200 Nm of max torque. It consumes fuel at 27.30 kmpl. Coming to the transmissions, the petrol gets a five-speed manual or CVT whereas the diesel entails only a six-speed manual gearbox. Under the hood, it gets a 1.2L K12 petrol engine and a 1.3L diesel powertrain that erupts maximum power of 84 PS / 115 Nm and peak torque of 75 PS / 190 Nm correspondingly. 1. Maruti Suzuki Swift 2018

The newly launched 2018 Maruti Swift seizes the apex spot of being the most fuel-efficient car in India with the ARAI mileage figures read 22.0 kmpl for petrol trims and 28.4 kmpl for diesel trims. Compared to its predecessor, the new Maruti Swift is an advanced product and features for the first time the Automatic Manual Transmission (AMT) in both the petrol and diesel powertrains. As far as the engine is concerned, it carries the same 1.2 litre petrol and 1.3 litre diesel motors that churns the same amount of peak power and peak torque. However, the boot size of the Maruti Suzuki Swift 2018 has increased and the interiors too have become more spacious than the previous generation. Cosmetically, the 2018 Swift is appealing, and projector headlights with LED Daytime Running Lights give it a premium contemporary look.

The milage depends on traffic condition vehicle maintenence tyre condition and offcourse driving habit.
New swift is best in petrol and diesel in these segment.
