On January 9th, 2018, the Gurugram-based tyre manufacturing company, Apollo Tyres, laid the foundation stone of a 1,800 crore tyre factory in Andhra Pradesh. This will be company’s 7th unit globally and will be set up at a 200-acre site in the Chittoor district.

The foundation stone was laid by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, N Chandrababu Naidu in the presence of the Managing Director and Chairman of Apollo Tyres.

Initially, this factory will roll out Passenger Car Radial (PCR) tyres owing to great demand in this segment and later will expand to other product categories too. The starting capacity will be around 5.5 million tyres per year, which will serve both domestic and international markets. The construction work for this factory will kick off in the next 6 months and the factory is expected to be functioning in the following 24 months. Once started, it will provide direct employment to over 700 people.

As per Neeraj Kanwar, Vice Chairman and Managing Director, Apollo Tyres, 5 years ago Apollo was a small player in the PCR segment, but now they are ranking 2nd in India in this segment with strong supplies to vehicle makers and aftermarket demand. He also asserted that the brand has itself strengthened over these years in the domestic markets while the exports are growing at a good rate. Also, that in the first phase of this Andhra Pradesh unit they will be producing 180-200 tonnes a day.

Looking at their logistical data for 2016-2017, the PCR segment accounted for 39% of the company’s revenues which stood at INR 13,060 crore.

He also said that in the next phase of expansion, the company may look at making commercial vehicle and off-highway tyres. Kanwar also stated that the company is currently in the process of rolling out high-end motorcycle tyres from its Vadodara (Gujarat) facility.

Apollo Tyres currently has 4 manufacturing facilities in the country – Kerala (two facilities) and one each in the states of Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. Overseas, they have factories in Hungary (one) and The Netherlands (one).
